Udupi, Dec 29: “Manual scavenging is a very bad system. Hence, in this regard, create awareness in Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes’ colonies in the district,” directed deputy commissioner (DC) M Kurma Rao to the officials of the Social Welfare Department.
He was speaking at the DC office here on Wednesday December 29.
He further said, “As there is the possibility of using people for manual scavenging in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes colonies, people should be educated through street plays and other programmes. Display advertisement boards near the community and buildings of Social Welfare department.”
He also directed the officials to use suction machines to maintain toilets.
“Manual scavengers’ survey has been conducted in the district, but no cases were found. If any cases of manual scavenging are found, collect their details and provide them rehabilitation facilities. Provide financial assistance to purchase suction vehicles.
“Using manual scavengers is also a punishable offense,” the DC informed.
Zilla panchayat CEO Dr Naveen Bhat, additional DC Balakrishnappa, ASP Kumar Chandra and others were present in the meeting.
