Mangaluru, Dec 30: N Shashi Kumar, the police commissioner of Mangaluru took charge of the post a year ago. A number of cases were solved under his able guidance.
Addressing media on Thursday December 30, he gave out the details of the important cases handled in the year since he took over.
He said, “Thirteen important cases were dealt with in 2021. In the month of January, two cases were filed in Ullal and Konaje police station over desecration of temple where objectionable items were found in the offertory box. The accused was arrested on December 28 who was involved in 18 such cases.
“Cases include beef stall set on fire in Thokottu, 38 Sri Lankan national held, murder of a minor due to PUBG game, arrest of a person in Ullal for having link with ISIS, Naga Bana desecration case where the culprit was arrested.
“A honey trap case was cracked under Surathkal police station limits where 4 persons were arrested. Maya and Karkana gang members were arrested for assaulting police constable at New Chitra, theft and murder of Ravi Poojary aides, series of thefts under Moodbidri police station limits and arrest of accused involved in fake RTPCR certificates at Talapady.
“Sexual harassment on law student and an intern, murder and rape of 8-year-old girl at tiles factory, and Dr Rathnakar’s arrest after viral video,” he said.
The police commissioner also informed that NDPS 328 cases were filed and 492 were arrested. “Rs 85,00,000 worth drugs including ganja, MDMA, cocaine and LSD were seized. The accused arrested including 5 to 6 Nigerian nationals and an Oman national in drug case. A hydroweed case was cracked were a medical student was arrested,” he said.
“Public outreach programmes such as area domination exercise, drug disposal, Covid management programme, property parade, free police canteen for 4 months during the pandemic, police enrolment programme for youths, physical fitness, Tulu Beary language training class, workshop of police staffs and work from home and grievance programme were also conducted.

‘Five moral policing cases were also registered,” he said.
“The temples and Naga Bana desecration and the law student sexual harassment cases were quite challenging,” said the police commissioner.
He also informed that as many as 146 police personnel had tested positive for Covid and one lone death was reported due to the virus.
The police commissioner said that 1,256 rowdy sheets were closed and 315 new rowdy sheets were opened. “As many as 140 civil police constables and 21 sub inspectors were newly appointed. Nineteen constables were promoted to as head constables, and two assistant sub inspectors to sub inspectors. In CAR section, 135 cops were promoted in 2021,” he said.
“During the pandemic, 304 cases were filed under the Epidemic Act and 310 under the NDM Act. As many as 25,145 mask rule violators were fined and 104 over social distancing. A total of 2,524 cases were filed over consumption of liquor and tobacco in public places, 615 FIRs were registered and 3,618 vehicles were seized. Rs 39,92,383 was collected in fines,” he informed.
DCP law and order Hariram Shankar, DCP crime and traffic Dinesh Kumar, ACP Ranjith and others were present.
