Mangalore: International Status – Local Airport Losing Out to Kannur?

Mangalore: International Status – Local Airport Losing Out to Kannur?

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Dec 7: Has the demand for, and activities connected with, securing international status for Mangalore Airport, died down? Have the people in strategic places, including the politicians, tired of raising the demand for earning international status for our airport? At a time when the MPs and union ministers hailing from the state appear to be doing precious little to turn the international airport dream into a reality, the officials and politicians of our neighbouring state, Kerala, are silently forging ahead, and Kannur is likely to boast of an international airport shortly.

Karnataka has only one international airport in Bangalore, which has been built not by the government, but on private-public partnership basis. Once Kannur becomes an international airport, Kerala will have three such airports, as against one here. Moreover, because of nearness of Kannur to the city, the upgradation efforts of the airport here are likely to suffer.

At present, 17 flights on an average, including to destinations like Dubai, Muscat, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait etc., operate from the local airport. Within the nation, flights operate to Bangalore, Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram etc. At the fag end of May this year, union minister for civil aviation, Praful Patel, had announced that the 8,000-ft runway of the airport here would be extended by another 1,000 ft to bring it at par with international standards. Having a minimum of 9,000 ft runway is mandatory for an airport to earn international status. After the announcement of the minister, nothing seems to have been done to bring his words into practice.

Even though flights from and to international destinations have been landing and taking off from the local airport at present, this airport has not earned the ‘international’ tag as yet. In addition to the length of the runway, there are a few more terms and conditions besides standards of services to be complied with. However, runway standard is the major condition that has to be met.

There had been speculations that this table-top airport was not suited for international flights, particularly so because of the air crash of May 22 this year. However, various authorities have confirmed that the facilities at this airport here are on par with standards prescribed. The inquiry has found that the pilot of the aircraft was entirely responsible for the crash in which the Air India Express flight had overshot the run way before plunging into a gorge.

In Kerala, politicians seem to be working together, sinking their party affiliations, in the larger interests of their state. In Karnataka, however, our leaders are almost always busy sorting out their inter-party squabbles, and fighting with the leaders from the other parties. Karnataka coast boasts of a few persons including a union minister, who have a strong clout in the union government, and who have the capacity to make things happen. It is to be seen as to whether they have the will to come together and act fast before it is too late.

In Kannur, 516 acres of land has been acquired, and 316 acres additional land is being acquired to build a new international airport. This airport project, which is being set up at a cost of 1,100 crore, is being executed on private-public participation basis. Works on this airport will begin on December 17 this year, and is expected to be completed fast, although the project has not been able to beat some deadlines that were set in the past.

Mr.Dharmaraj D'costa, i request you to mind ur language. it was a great visionary Mr.U S Mallya who brought an airport n a sea port to mangalore.
mangalore airport is more than 59 yrs old.
u r from this generation nd now majority of gulfies may be are from ur region.doesn mean that Mr.U S Mallya should have thought of you 59 yrs back.
if that great personality would be alive i would request him to ask you y should you have been born in kunadapur? couldn you be born in bajpe itself? so that ur sausages, chocolates, and other foodstuff dont spoil covering the distance from bajpe to kundapur.

i am not an expert on airports but wish to tell all that bajpe airport was established in 1951 (you can name it one of the oldest airports after Juhu in 1936 or so.).This airport has served mangaloreans for more than half a decade and now after May air india express accident, has suddenly become a bad airport..is it? Just give me the names of any airport where accidents didn't happen! Even the enquiry proved that it was pilot to be blamed.. so let us stop discussing the dangers of table top and concentrate on passenger safety..those who have knowledge..send information on how to make mangalore more safer..after all it is an airport nearing its diamond jubilee..serving everyone in coastal karnataka and kerala.lets make mangalore airport that has served our previous generation and make it serve the generations to come....

    Dear Mr. Nelson (Valencia/ Kuwait):

What makes you think that people from Udupi, Kundapur and Bhatkal would be happy with an airport in Kannur? Do you want all our sausages, chocolates, and other foodstuff to spoil covering the distance from Kannur to Honavar (for example)?

I cannot understand why it was logical in the first place to build an airport in Mangalore and that too on a tabletop? Who was the moron who decided on Godforsaken Bajpe for an airport?

The airport should have been equidistance to all taluks of SK, NK, and Udupi districts, atleast, taking into consideration that a majority of the gulfies from the coastal districts are from this region itself!

The airport should have been somewhere in udupi district to alleviate the hillock problems of mangalore and the accessibility of most passengers from all the coastal districts.

Now, two issues are creating another pandemonium.

One Ajith Menon made a sub-standard and cheap comment
    addressing the people of Karnataka,
which is very hurting. As a
Keralite, I was shocked to read
his comment. May I appeal to the
    people of Karnataka: since there
are trouble makers in the world,
    please ignore that comment, and
I will ask your apology on
behalf of that person who did this
    terrible mistake, simply for the
    fun of creating discord. After
    reding that wording addressing the
people of Karnataka with one of
the highest literacy rate and great educational institutions in India, I felt
    greatly embarrassed, and was
nervous to write any more comment
    in the Daijiworld.

    If the central government is
BJP, the BJP ruled State government
will be allotted with many public
    projects like airport, harbour,
    railway lines etc, provided there
is somebody mighty at the state level to pull the string.

    Now, Karnataka is boiling with
politcal problems, and who has the
time to knock at the Ministial
    offices in Delhi to snatch
    allottments?

Kerala began to get some of these
    central government gifts, only
    very recently. Even though the
State of Kerala was a top foreign
    currency earner, Kerala was ignored
    for a long time.

This is my humble and earnest appeal, let us all live in
    peace and harmony.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.

Good News! It's a lesson to sleeping Mangaloreans. Real estate prices have been made sky rocketing in the name of international airport last time. People have become greedy and they have become selfish ignoring the the common man. Let International Airport go to Kannur, because they deserve it as they are hard working and enterprising.

I could note nice that Ms. Jamini always blaming malayaless for small small issues. Comparing with Karnataka, Kerala is only ¼ of Karnataka, But We have 3 International Airports and one more airport is coming in Kannur. This is the efforts of our unity.
U know where ever malayalies lives, first they will form an organization and all malayees brings in a single flat form, there is no division of Religious, caste and colour. We love our Kerala cultures and Kerala peoples. For your knowledge first communist government in the world elected though ballot paper belongs to Kerala Kerala has contributed many gentle men for the growth of world and India. Mr.Sasi Tharoor, He was only one candidate for the post of UN Secretary General from India, He is 100% Malayalee. In the Gulf regions u can see Mr. Yousuf Ali, He is the member of Abudhabi Chamber of Commerce and he is keeping very good relations with all gulf royal family, he also from Kerala. You can’t point out any other single man from our country in Gulf other than Yousuf Ali,In our India, in the central cabinet after Mr. Praab Mukareeje next full power cabinet minister is Mr. A.K Antonty, He is not from Karanatka. So Many examples we have, So please be jealous with kerala people, We are all india, Keep away state wise politics and fight for our country development. Jai Hind & Jai Kerala.

I really dont understand why mangaloreans are crying over this issue here. Instead of using Bajpe use kannur airport in future. What is the big deal. Kannur has many good connections to mangalore via bus or train and the drive is less than two hour. There is no hard rule that only Keralites can use this airport. There are many instances when mangalorians have been coming into mangalore from Trivandrum or Cochin. So isnt this better now. The Kerala govt unlike our government takes care of its people and wants airports into every nook and corner of Kerala for the benefit of its people. But i feel this is a sort of blessing in disguise for mangalorians as well. Cheer up guys. Happy journey next time around.

Mangalore Airport cannot be made International after the recent tragedy. This is the first and foremost reason why it is awarded to Kannur. Kerala people are industrious, they apply thier mind and heart to work. That is their success. Thirdly we do not have politicians in Karnataka who can work for airports, they are work for thier own "ports". If you travel a few kilometres towards ghat section you have plenty of land for airports, level areas around Belthangady, Uppinangady etc. But if such land is available, immediately either Deve Gowda, Kumarraaswamy of Yeddyurappa or Daram Singh will scam it for sure. So where is the possibility for an International Airport in Karnataka around Mangalore. Besides look at our roads, they are worse than in former Bihar. Certainly not an International Airport, look for a "Cow Port". Daniel - Belthangady

Secondly they confront women on personal jewelry and harras (intention for a bribe) this was done to my wife. Thirdly they opened our baggage and found nothing - reason for doing this was that we relented and asked them to put our valuables in our passport.
To top this - it was done 10.30 pm in the night(Air india express re-scheduled on Kuwait -Mangalore sector arrival time 7.30 am) to a family of three who had to travel to Udupi on unlit forest roads towards mulki. I hope a recording is done for every action by customs by having a designated area for questioning. Custom officers not to interact with passengers outside this area - which will help Mangaloreans peace of mind on arrival.

In general Mangaloreans are known for their straight forwardedness, gentleness and intelligence world wide and I feel there is nothing they need to learn from people of your origin. Mangaloreans can also describe you with many such honours which is readily available in local "tulu" langauage.

There are much difficult interntional airports in different parts of the world and still such airports are operating. Comparatively Mangalore airport is much better and has no problems if landing is done in the normal way.

Our airport is facing few technical problems like there is valley on both the end of the new runway and to extend another 1000 feet in will cost hell a lot of money. Secondly, the approach road to the new airport is messed up by Sridevi College by cutting the hillock unscientifically. However, people of Kannur and around region have Mangalore Airport 120km to its North and Calicut Airport is 125km to the South. Nevertheless, for Mangaloreans the distance between Mangalore and Bangalore is 400km and to Calicut airport is 250km hence they should give the priority to Mangalore than Kannur. Central Ministers and Industrialists of this region should appeal to the Central Govt and Praful Patel not to let us down.

Why do your Malabari's come to Mangalapurum to serve thier master's in the Gulf? Then why do you boast oof 3 international airports. Is it simbly.Haaaaaa!!!!

As a local Resident & freequent user of mangalore i don't have any pride to say this is our international standard airport. because i don't feel that airport tax they are collecting is not worth for the airport maintenance & facilities???? custom officials are directly asking bribes other wise custom charge is 4 times more for receipt.

Please keep aside party politics. Unite together for cause of Mangalore. One missmanagement in Mangalore airport is car parking charge. On December 3rd one of my relatives just ed passenger and went back. But, he had to pay Rs. 60. Their claim was, time allowed to is 5 minutes only, time to travel between entry gate and exit gate. According to them he came back after 10 minutes (due to collecting trolly). Therefore, I request authorities to allow 15 minutes time to passengers to avoid this kind of unnesessary charges.

The key point is as long as Mangalore is not a true International Airport many international or natiional airlines will not fly direct from Mangalore to destinations abroad. This will mean Air India can continue to milk the gullible gulf NRI's with an exhorbitant fair and a lousy service. Who would want to kill a goose that lays golden eggs?

HEHEHE! KANNADIGAS AND OTHERS IN KARNATAKA ONLY FIT TO CHEAT AMONG THEMSELVES AND GRAB GOVERNMENT LANDS AND PLAY POLITICS AMONG VARIOUS COMMUNITIES, CASTES, SUB-CASTES, BACKWARD COMMUNITIES AND WHAT NOT!

MY BEST SUGGESTION, DEAR ALL YOU MANGALAPURAM MONKEYS, IS TO TELL YEDDURAPPA TO GRAB SOME 200 ACRES LAND SOMEWHERE IN MANGALORE AND GIFT IT TO HIS SON, AND TO LET HIM MAKE AN AIRPORT FOR HIS OWN BENEFIT, AND CHARGE ALL YOU PASSENGERS FOR UTILIZING AND LANDING IN HIS PRIVATE PROPERTY AS "AIRPORT TAX"...HEHEHE!

ATLEAST, YOU WILL HAVE GOT A DECENT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (EVEN THOUGH THROUGH A SCAM) AND NOT THE CURRENT AIRPORT, WHERE EVERYONE IN THE AIRPLANE IS SWEATING WITH TENSION, AND SILENTLY PRAYING TO ALMIGHTY, THAT THEY LAND SAFELY IN MANGALAPURAM IN ONE PIECE, AND NOT FALL IN SOME DITCH.

The leaders of South Kanara (undivided district) are not having any power at Central. Even they do not have interest to develop their own district. Simlpy they are boosting themselves in the public meetings that too in thier area only. The people and some organisations of this district also fed up of fighting and protests. Jai Ho Kerala.

I had been to Mangalore just a week back. It was disappointing to see the New Terminal Building built without adequate facilities. Though the Aero Bridge is operational, the flight through which i travelled was parked away from the aerobridge and passengers were made to walk to the arrival hall. There is no facility of phones at the waiting lounge of boarding gate. Moreover the seating capacity for passengers at the waiting lounge near boarding is limited to less than 100 people which means if there are more than 100 passengers travelling the remaining have to stand. The road from the terminal towards city is full of potholes. All this is the root cause of corrupt politicians.

Billions of Rupees remitted from Keralites from all over the world and common man is richer than that of Karnataka. But thier leaders are careful in spending or donating tax payers money. Well Things working good for Kerala often you can take examples of train or air travel. Leaders from coastal Karnataka are not only busy with party internal affairs but also clever in appearing on media front pages by holding highest level postings in union ministry with their fake promises, actually they are never serious of upgrading public amenities like infrastructure, power or water issues till todate. When you aproach them they just give verbal assurances no practical actions from them nor any serious desire to lookafter public grievances, Where are in Kerala public voice is treated like gods order by the leaders of that state hence they run strong lobby in union cabinet to snatch the funds for development of the state effectively. But our leaders like Oscarji's, Moilyjis, SMKrishnajis, Khargeji holding high profile ministry just to enjoy their five year term as ministers, Though Khargeji/ oscarji's only available in m.lore during election time but other leaders even hard to find in daylight.
Take the issue of NH's NH17, NH13, NH48 passing thru m.lore, the time has come to change the name as Pothole highways as many of the places you cannot find bitumen track for several meters of the road. We are only envy of our neighbouring gods own country Kerala while our leaders enjoy seven star life style in their offices..

Karnataka politicians in the center are usless and only thinking about schemes to appease their votebanks. This is what they all care about and not togather bring some devlopment to their constituency's
    1. Current MP Nalin Kumar , anyways he cannot speak to anyone in Delhi, he is only seen at the inaugrations of Bhajana Mandir's & Kambla.
    2. Veerappa Moily is busy concentrating in adding pages to constitution & IPC to favor reservations and appease his vote bank by talking about injustice to OBC & minorites.
    3. Dhanajay Kumar is Spokesperson for TV9 on behalf of BJP,as no other leaders in the state have left Grace to show their face.
    4. Oscar Fernadies, This man, what should I say about this man, despite being in the core circle of 10Janpath for so many years has he of any help to Udupi or DK district ?,Only seen in inaguration of Banks & Flower/greetings Shops along with his wife.Once in a while come out of his borrow and say the magic word to media "CENTER IS WATCHING". dont know what or on who's behalf he is sitting in Delhi.
    5. Sadananda Gowda, the man with a golden smile, always feel good factor whatevr rot happens in BJP, he thinks party will overcome it and high command will take action and voters understand and will bless us.
    6. Mr Janardhan Poojary,It will be blunder on my part if I dont mention about this SIR.Although better among the rest atleast if he had talked atleast half what he does now in press club to Praful Patel things would have been diffrent.
