Bengaluru: CM Bommai defends Covid curbs as BJP's own ministers express doubts

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Jan 7: The Karnataka government's decision to impose weekend curfew, night curfew and other curbs amid rising number of coronavirus cases has stirred resentment and disappointment within the BJP. A few cabinet colleagues of the ruling party have expressed unhappiness over the move.

It is learnt that ministers including K S Eshwarappa have openly criticized the implementation of curfew even in districts where the cases are relatively low. Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, however, has defended the action taken by the government.

"Cases of coronavirus infections are increasing in main cities of the state, including Bengaluru. If curfew is implemented in only the cities, people will migrate to their native places. That will increase the cases in rural areas also. That is why uniform curfew rules are implemented across the state," Bommai said.

"Several civic organizations have also put forward their demands. We have already held discussions on reopening liquor stores and other issues during our cabinet meeting, but no decision has been taken yet," he said.

Though the cabinet ministers insisted on relaxing the rules in districts where the cases are low, it is learnt that the chief minister decided to continue the status quo till Sankranti festival on January 14. Depending on the situation, decision will be taken on relaxing the curbs thereafter.

Speaking at a press conference, minister Madhuswamy said, "Uniform Covid regulations are applied throughout the state till January 19. There is an opinion among some of our cabinet colleagues that these restrictions are not needed in some districts. That is why we will look into the possibility of revising the rules on January 15."

Even though i political party neutral, I appreciate the CM's decision of sticking to his guns. None of the politicians have the confidence to stick to their decisions when their own party people start criticizing. Many districts may have less covid numbers currently but that is because many of these go undetected. Government instead of weekend curfew should actively discourage travelling by the public except in genuine cases. People who have option of working from home should be compulsorily made to opt for it. I think the government is right to curtail public from spending weekends outside because we are currently heading for the same scenario that we faced last year. The government has learnt from its lesson and does not want it to be repeated.

Mr Kira, Stop thinking just about the IT Class getting to work from home. The world is much bigger than that. People only when they work like labourers, Taxi/auto drivers, delivery men, other private and local businesses can feed themselves. Or else ask Bommai to give 1L to everyone and do lockdown as per his whims and fancies.

Natural thing every person will do, even hardened criminals do the same. Defending indefensible is the trait of cunning politicians. Unscientific lockdowns and authoritarian enforcement of any mandates is the only option left for them as they are marketing agents of vaccine mafia. Time for people to wake up and unite to end this unholy nexus.

God save us please. Why is the common man being tormented with all these curfews and restrictions and lockdowns. But no control imposed over meaningless political rallies and other gatherings. Really sad for most of us common people who unfortunately don't have any option to make things better either in the short term.
