Mangaluru/Udupi, Jan 8: The coastal districts on Saturday January 8 witnessed another sharp rise in the number of coronavirus cases, with Dakshina Kannada reporting 295 new infections, and Udupi 186 fresh cases.

As per the Dakshina Kannada district health bulletin, a total of 25,02,050 samples have been tested so far, out of which 23,84,707 have turned out to be negative.

The total number of positive cases in the district has risen to 1,17,343, out of which 994 are currently active.

A total of 14 patients were discharged from hospitals on Sunday, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,14,645.

The death toll in the district so far stands at 1,704, out of which seven are non-Covid deaths. No death was reported on Saturday.

The positivity rate in the district has risen to 2.91%.

With cases increasing by the day, the district administration has urged people to strictly continue maintaining social distance in public places and wear masks when stepping out of the house. Anyone not wearing a mask would be fined by the authority.

So far, the district administration has collected Rs 1,11,46,630 as fine in 92,204 incidents of mask violation.


Udupi

As per the district health bulletin, as many as 14,13,623 samples have been tested so far.

As many as 186 new cases were reported on Friday, taking the total number of cases to 77,834, out of which 708 are currently active.

A total of 36 patients were discharged from hospitals on Friday, taking the total number of recoveries to 76,647.

Out of 186 new cases, as many 177 are in home isolation, while 9 are admitted to Covid hospitals.

Udupi city reported 137 cases while Karkala reported 22, and Kundapur 27.

Out of the 186, as many as 119 are symptomatic and 67 asymptomatic.

Coronavirus has claimed 479 lives in the district so far. No death was reported on Saturday.

So far, 10,06,031 people have received the first dose of vaccination, while 8,51,430 have received the second dose.

A total of 53 cases of mucormycosis (black fungus) have been reported in the district so far, and all have recovered.

As on Saturday, 53,916 people have been penalized for not wearing mask and an amount of Rs 59,73,770 has been collected.

Currently, the district has nine active containment zones.
