Udupi: Grandson Satyaki says Savarkar wrote letter of conciliation, not apology

Udupi, Jan 13: Satyaki Savarkar, grandson of Veer Savarkar, insisted that the letter Savarkar wrote to the British authorities seeking his release from the Andaman cellular jail was not a letter of apology, but of conciliation.

He was speaking at the 'Jayosthuthe' programme organized in the town hall here on Wednesday January 12 by 'Koorma Balaga'. "In order to mentally torture Savarkar and to diminish his mental faculties, prisoners used to be hanged in his presence. He was provided with poor substandard food. At the same time, the British used to exult outside, and the society witnessed enmity based on castes and discrimination was rampant. Savarkar realized that under these circumstances, he would not be able to achieve anything by remaining inside the jail. With no other option, he decided to come out of the prison," he explained.

He accused political leaders of spreading false information and malaise against Savarkar through lies like he had apologised to the British, never took part in freedom struggle, and had a hand in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi etc. Leaders of a particular political party had been spreading these things in the past and continue to do so, he said. He called upon the people to study about the background and story of Savarkar in their entirety to find the truth.

"Savarkar, after coming out of the prison, started an organization titled 'Mitramela' in Nasik, Maharashtra. He used to instil patriotism in the young minds by explaining about the adventures and heroics of Chatrapati Shivaji. He created revolutionaries to fight against the British. Savarkar, who was sentenced for life twice, suffered very cruel forms of tortures in the Andaman jail. He was a freedom fighter in a real sense," Satyaki explained.

Satyaki said that even after coming out of jail, Savarkar never remained quiet. He advocated the need to study and follow religious texts and the necessity to follow Hindutva. He worked hard to bring social changes, he narrated.

Sandeep Balakrishnan, BJP leader Uday Kumar Shetty, and journalist Srikanth Shetty, were present.

How did he come out of Andaman prison so easily???????. What was the condition and agreement with British for his release from the prison???????. All the freedom fighters did not walk out of the prison like him but were carried out from the prison as dead or taken to gallows. Unless he has admitted his fault against the British and repented and begged for mercy and agreed to work with British he could never have been released from prison. That letter of mercy is still with govt.

Interestingly, on his way back to India, Craddock wrote his report onboard the ship where he said that Savarkar “cannot be said to express any regret or repentance” for whatever he did. “So important a leader is he,” Craddock noted, “that the European section of the Indian anarchists would plot for his escape which would before long be organised. If he were allowed outside the Cellular Jail in the Andamans, his escape would be certain. His friends could easily charter a steamer to lie off one of the islands and a little money distributed locally would do the rest.” The government obviously rejected his petition and nothing changed for Savarkar.

Ironically those who castigate Savarkar for the petitions are the same human rights activists who advocate the cause of the likes of Kasab, Yakub Memon, and the Naxals and their intellectual fountainheads. The last line of this petition that draws controversy is open to interpretation: “The mighty alone can afford to be merciful and therefore where else can the prodigal son return but to the parental doors of the Government?” Being a Biblical reference, it can well be said that he was appealing to the religious sentiments of his incarcerators. Selective quoting of just a few lines of this petition, without looking at it completely or in context, is intellectually disingenuous.

In his petition dated 14 November 1913 to Craddock, Savarkar argued that while common convicts of rape, murder, theft and other crimes were given promotions on the basis of their good conduct or let out into the settlement for work after 6-18 months, such provisions were not available for him as he was a ‘special class prisoner’. But when he asked for better food or treatment, he was denied those on the basis of being an ‘ordinary convict’. Had he been a political prisoner in an Indian jail, he would have earned remission or could write more than just the single annual letter and meeting with his family that he was allowed. This dichotomy disadvantaged him on both fronts.

By 1913, Savarkar and several other prisoners began hunger strikes and non-cooperation in jail to protest against this inhuman treatment. The rest of India was blissfully unaware of the tortures their compatriots faced in Kaala Pani. Hence, articles were leaked out for publication in Indian newspapers. Savarkar’s clandestine attempts to start bomb manufacturing in Port Blair alarmed the authorities. Finally, in October 1913, Sir Reginald H. Craddock, home member of the government of India, decided to visit the Cellular Jail and interview some of the political prisoners to ascertain their grievances. Savarkar and other political prisoners- Barin Ghose, Nand Gopal, Hrishikesh Kanjilal, and Sudhir Kumar Sarkar were interviewed and allowed to submit petitions. This process was a legitimate tool available for all political prisoners in British India, just like the opportunity of defending oneself in court through the agency of a lawyer was. As a barrister, Savarkar knew the law and wished to utilise all provisions under it to free himself or alleviate his situation in prison. Savarkar often advised other political prisoners too that the primary duty of a revolutionary was to free himself from the British clutches so as to return to the freedom struggle and in service of the motherland.

In the Cellular Jail, he was meted the worst kind of punishments. Fettered in chains, flogged, condemned to six months of solitary confinement, made to extract oil all day being tied to the mill like a bullock, punished with standing handcuffs for days on end, lack of the most basic human needs such as toilets or water and fed with foul food that had pieces of insects and reptiles – it was truly a devil’s island.

In the five years that Savarkar spent in London as a law student, he galvanised the revolutionary movement that sought total and complete freedom from British rule. From India to Europe, and even America, a network of bravehearts guided by him, made contacts with Irish, French, Italian, Russian and American leaders, revolutionaries and the press to bring British India to the forefront of global discourse. No doubt, the British government categorised him as one of the most dangerous seditionists. Under an unfair Fugitive Offenders Act (FOA) of 1881 that did not apply to him because he was a bonafide student in London and not a fugitive, Savarkar was deported to India and tried with no right to appeal or defence. He was slapped with two life imprisonments, totalling 50 years, to rot in the Cellular Jail of the Andamans along with his elder brother Ganesh Damodar Savarkar. The British documents speak of how petrified they were of his very presence and hence wanted him as far away from the Indian mainland as possible.

If you’re given the agency of a petition, that doesn’t mean you’re a (British) stooge. He was released from Ratnagiri in 1924 on two conditions, one was, you’re not going to participate in politics for five years. And the second is you are going to be confined to Ratnagiri and not move anywhere out. Now, if he had become a stooge by then, at the end of the five years, he should have been released by the British because somebody was on your side, it’s always good to let them free, or once you get him into the government,

After his arrest by the British government on March 13, 1910, Savarkar was brought to the Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) in Andamans on July 4, 1911. He was arrested following the assassination of AMT Jackson, then district magistrate of Nasik. Savarkar was in London when the assassination was carried out. He was accused of providing the pistol used to kill Jackson, from London. Savarkar and his elder brother Ganesh Damodar Savarkar had founded Mitra Mela (now called “Abhinav Bharat”) in Nasik, a secret revolutionary society, linked to the assassination. Ganesh Savarkar was arrested the year before in connection with another assassination of a British official. Savarkar filed his first mercy petition in 1911. “The official protocol demanded that all political prisoners submit clemency petitions to the government seeking their release and pardon as part of the Delhi Durbar goodwill gesture. Accordingly, everyone, including Vinayak, submitted their petitions to the jail authorities. Vinayak’s petition was received on 30 August 1911. Although no copy of this petition is extant, there remains only a reference to this in his ‘Jail History Ticket’.” This is an excerpt from the book Echoes from a Forgotten Past, 1883-1924 by Vikram Sampath.

He was sentenced to 50 years in a cellualar Jail. by remaining rest of his life in this Jail there was nothing he could acheive there by sitting till death in the Andaman Jail. Tell me who will pledge their children for the sake of Kingdom. Tippu also could have got arrested or killed for the sake of his children. what was the guarentee that the British would spare his children?. He killed Kodavas by deceit. In the Malabar he converted the Hindus into muslims many of them were Nairs. He took away the nair women as concumbines as war booty. His donation for Hindu temples was also tactical as he donated to Hindu temples in Mysore region and not to temples in Kerala. He had to placate the Hindus of his kingdom so some benevolence was shown to them. He wanted a caliphate in India that was what he fought for.

Not just Bhagath Singh but also sukdev and Rajguru . Dont forget them. They were sentenced to death in a short period of time whereas Savarkar was despatched to a faraway island and was not killed but exterminated for 50 years. when one sists in jail for years, the thought of escaping from their clutches occurs. there was no escape but to rot and that would not have helped his cause and that is why he had to write the Apology letter. This was tactial move by him. Remeber both Bhagath Singh and Savarkar were Atheists in beleifs. Savarkar wanted to smash caste system, cooked prawns and didn’t worship the cow. He was a non vegetarian though born as a Brahmin.

So British were so weak they negotiated with their prisoner to remain in power. Joke of 21st century. He betrayed patriots and got monthly pension from British for nothing? History can't be rewritten to portray a coward as hero. He even wrote a book in pseudo name like modern day bakts and gave himself a name as VEER! Who rejoiced when Gandhi was assassinated by the gun he provided? Many attempts were made on Gandhi before and always disowned by this desh premi or royalties humble servant who served them more than the country he was born. All these are on record and articles in those days unbiased papers anyway people's memories are always short. The more one tries to paint a rosy picture the more previous skeletons tumble out.

Looks like somebody has now appeared to take advantage of his ancestors. Conciliation it seems. People like bhagat singh who were on death row, also did not think of apologising to british to come out of jail. They chose death instead of kissing the british shoe. And wat did savarkar do coming out of the jail. He did not raise his voice against british even once after coming out of jail. Veer it seems.
