Mangalore, Dec 23: “For an artiste to hone his skills and develop further, support and shelter by the rulers is very much required. In the past, kings and emperors used to support endeavours towards supporting the culture and refinement of the land by contributing to the growth of art, culture, literature and such other things. The government has taken over the role of kings and emperors now, and has been discharging this responsibility,” he said. He was speaking after inaugurating Dakshina Kannada District Karavali Utsav, which has of late become an annual feature, at Karavali Utsav Ground on the evening of Wednesday December 22.

He praised the initiatives of the government towards supporting various forms of art, through Fine Arts Academy, Yakshagana Academy, Kannada Sahitya Parishat, and various other bodies. He felt that Karavali utsav, which is one of the programmes aimed at supporting art and culture, is a laudable initiative.

He noted that the people of the region have since long, developed a unique personality of their own, and their Daivas, Gods, Kambala and other rituals have earned a unique place for the art and culture of the land. “The people here have imbibed certain modern applications introduced by the Portuguese and the British. At the same time, they have continued to work hard.  Intelligent people from this region have been working in various other states and countries, thereby contributing to the growth of their native districts,” he noted.

Karavali Utsav Committee president and district deputy commissioner, Subodh Yadav, city commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, district superintendent of police, Dr A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, and  other dignitaries were present at the inaugural.

Zilla panchayath chief executive officer, P Shivashankar, welcomed. District unit president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Pradipkumar Kalkura, delivered introductory address.
