Mangalore, Dec 30:
At a press conference held on Thursday December 30, deputy commissiner Subodh Yadav informed that out of the total 215 nominations for the zilla panchayat (ZP) elections and 575 nominations for the taluk panchayat (TP) elections, only 188 nominations were considered for ZP and 533 for TP. Finally after withdrawals, 116 candidates are contesting the ZP polls and 374 candidates are contesting the TP polls comprising Mangalore, Beltangady, Bantwal, Sullia, and Puttur constituencies.

Giving further details DC said that Mangalore has a total of 1,027 polling booths, out of which 109 are considered as hyper sensitive booths and 133 as sensitive booths. In all 6,780 people have been appointed for the election duty among who 1,130 are presiding officers, 4,520 assistant presiding officers and 1130 group ‘D’ officers. A total of 133 sector officers have also been appointed among who 40 will be stationed in Mangalore, 34 in Bantwal, 22 in Beltangady, 23 in Puttur and 14 in Sullia.
 
Around 63 private buses, 63 vans, 202 jeeps, and 95 KSRTC buses have been hired for election purposes, he said adding that 97 vehicles will be available for security purposes.
 
Around 242 video cameras will be installed to record clippings in case of any untoward incidents during the polls, he said.
 
In order to make election duty a smooth procedure, each polling booth will be availed with medical kits for emergencies along with medicines and instructions for illnesses. The kit includes paracetamol tablets, ORS packets and emergency numbers of medical officers. Ambulance facilities will also be provided, he added.
 
Information centres will also be set up in the booths for the benefit of voters, he said.
