Udupi, Feb 18: Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) state president Abdul Majeed on Thursday February 18 urged Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat to own moral responsibility for 'disturbing' peace in the state over the Hijab issue and tender resignation from the state assembly.
"Raghupathi Bhat is unfit to become a legislator. We do not need to learn any lessons from him. We have seen his bedroom escapades. He should desist from playing with the lives of the students. Raghupathi Bhat is an ignorant legislator," he said, adding, "BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel and chief minister Basavaraj Bommai should obtain a resignation letter from the MLA."
He further said, "I request the Chief Justice of the high court to pass an order soon. The interim order is clear that the students have to follow the dress code only if the administrations make wearing of uniforms compulsory. This is clearly stated. In many cases, this order was wrongly interpreted and Muslim students were stopped at the gates."
Majeed charged the BJP government of being 'anti-Muslim'. "It does not want Muslim girls to get educated. BJP government is twisting the court order. The Chief Justice has to intervene and give clear instruction as to what constitutes a uniform. The Hijab controversy has been created in order to camouflage the failure of the BJP government," he analyzed.
Speaking further, the SDPI state president termed as unforgivable crime the act of the police standing at the gates and threatening the students. "The director general of police has to intervene and issue instructions. Is it right on their part to force the students to remove their burqas on the roads?" he questioned.
Majeed accused the government of handling the students in an unconstitutional manner. He pleaded to address the issue amicably and save the reputation of the state. He claimed that SDPI has never indulged in the low level politics of this magnitude and clarified that his party will not reap political benefit out of the Hijab controversy.
Referring to the call given by minister Sunil Kumar to come out of the confinement of veils, he said that the Hijab does not symbolise confinement and said that it has been mentioned in the religious texts.
"BJP wants the Muslims to go to Pakistan. Let them go to Pakistan. We are Indians and we will die in this land. Words like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Islamization, Jihad and a few others have become a part of the BJP's agenda. They use these words to get some credibility," he felt.
