Media Release from Ronald Fernandes

Dammam, Jan 5: Saudi Konkan Youngsters (SKY), Dammam, celebrated ‘Nathalancho Dabazo’ on Thursday December 30, 2010.  The event started with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Arun D’souza, Palimar, Patrik Almeida, and SKY president, Ronald Fernandes. Community members came in large numbers to enjoy the programme.

The evening started with the opening prayer in Konkani rendered by the little children, followed by nativity skit and carol singing. The surprise guest was Santa Claus with his jingle bells and a bag full of chocolates, which enticed the children to run after him.

President, Ronald Fernandes, Shirthady, welcomed the guests and expressed his heartfelt thanks to all the sponsors for their continuous support, as well as to the members for their dedicated services and support to SKY.

The entertainment programmes started off with a classical dance, ‘Sonthosachi Raat’, performed by Rosella Pinto.  Kids and adults alike presented a variety of cultural programmes like solo and group singing, folk, classical, and filmy dances. The audience was kept thoroughly entertained by the laughter-filled skits presented by families and community members.

Snacks and traditional, homemade, ‘Kuswar’, were distributed to the gathering in specially designed packets to signify the festive mood of Christmas season.

Ivan Pinto was honoured for his victory in the recently concluded PETA Cup tennis championship, he being the first Indian to win this coveted tournament. Manoj Mascarenhas was honoured for representing Saudi Arabia in the ‘Gulf Voice of Mangalore’ singing competition held in Dubai.
A number of well-wishers came forward to support this event, prominent among them being Richard D’silva, Joy Fernandes, Anil Albuquerque(Riyadh), Roshan D’souza, Valerian Crasta, William Nelson Lobo, Patrick Almeida, Vincent Saldanha, Ronald Pinto, Richard Barboza, Maxim D’souza, Arun D’souza (Riyadh), Manoj Mascarenhas (Riyadh), Walter Lobo, Mark Tellis, and Stany Mathias.

In spite of all the prevailing restrictions, it is nice to know that the newly established Konkan Youngsters celebrated their Xmas in a grand scale in the midst of their families in Dammam, our good-old "home sweet home".

Aramco was wholly owned by four major gaints of America namely, Exxon, Mobil, Socal and Texaco until the year 1979. Xmas festivities in the Eatern Province until 1979 were celebrated in a traditional American fashion. We used to have a real live nativity pageant in Dhahran in the open air, organized by Aramco, at the baseball grounds where Aramco even brought the live camels, sheep and nomads too.

One year my dear wife also was a Santa Claus at a Xmas party in Alkhobar, and even my two little sons did not recognize her.

After the midnight service in Dhahran a dozen cars were heading towards Dammam to our home where we had a real "Fiesta" in the style of Bethlehem with a nice crib of nativity and a full band. Those were the days of Saudi Arabia we always remain mindful and grateful. The choir of Dhahran was dominated by the Goans. Late Casmiro D'Souza along with his wife Flory used to sing "Ave Maria" every Xmas midnight service. God is always kind and merciful, and that we are still smiling with fond memories of the past in Arabia.
