Bangalore: Opposition Forces Karnataka Governor to Cut Short Speech

Bangalore, Jan 6 (IANS) Slogan shouting opposition rooting for Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa's resignation over land scams Thursday forced Governor H.R. Bhardwaj to give up his speech to the joint sitting of the state legislature.

The Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) members were up on their feet as soon as Bhardwaj entered the state assembly hall at noon, urging him not to read the speech which marks the beginning of the year's legislative business.

Led by opposition leader Siddaramaiah of the Congress and H.D. Revanna, leader of the JD-S in the assembly, the members said Yeddyurappa should quit over various scams, particularly over his nepotism in allotting to his kin prime lands in and around Bangalore.

Within minutes of starting the speech, prepared by the state cabinet, Bhardwaj abandoned the effort and left the hall.

Later, the assembly secretary announced the speech as delivered by the governor has been placed before the house.

Yeddyurappa and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party members sat impassively through the ruckus.

Speaker K.G. Bopaiah adjourned the house to meet Friday.

The uproar was expected as the JD-S had announced it would not allow the 10-day session to conduct any business till Yeddyurappa quits.

The Congress, the main opposition, had said it would intensify the agitation in the two houses of the Karnataka legislature, seeking Yeddyurappa's resignation.

Yeddyurappa has denied any illegality in the land dealings but made his kin surrender the land as demand for his resignation mounted.

Deve Gowda's JDS the most communal party has only on agenda i.e.,to make way for Kumara to become CM of Karnataka because he can not digest other than Gowdas in the CM's chair.Recent TP/ZP results in favour of BJP has further poured ghee to the fire. Congress has no problem but being second party in the opposition has become diectionless as the high command is bussy in dealing with mega scam matters.Congress will be in the receiving end if it prefers to have tie up with JDS to create chaos in the assembly.

Main culprits in Karnataka politics are Kumars of DeveGowda & Sidaramaih to polute the situation every time...better Governor should take action against them to run the business smoothly and oppositions intention is not for BSY's resignation but the tarnish the image of ruling government to the nation...but its also true that people of Karnataka are well aware of their colours..so if they continue same they will face acute situation in next election results...giving 100% gain to BJP...Jai Hind

If Yeddy had not done anything wrong why did he surrender the lands given to his relatives in the first place? And how can he deny any illegality after surrendering the lands? Appreciate clarification from Mr Nageshmamu, self proclaimed spokesperson of the BJP government.

This is what BJP is doing and did not allow Loksabha or Raj Sabha to function for more than 22 days. Now let us see what BJP has to say. Even Raja, Chavan and Tarror resigned, BJP stalled the Parliment. Now is TIT for TAT. Opposition should not allow the Assembly to carry on until Yeddy and Reddy Bros resign.

What Guv has to read the speech prepared by state govt(Yeddy)is an embrrassement for him because he openly critizised the govt till last week! How could he read praising the govt performance in the joint session of the Assembly and it should be called as forced speech?!

This behaviour of oppon is in expected lines of parlimentary democracy in India and Karanataka in particular. An ruling party's house leader(CM)having nepotism and corruption charges with solid proof is unprecedented in Karanataka's political history who is still sticking to his chair!!!
