Bantwal, Feb 26: In a gory incident which happened at Elabe on the border of Bantwal town municipality with Narikombu village, two persons who ventured into a quarry pit with standing water to take bath met watery grave. This incident happened during the late evening hours of Friday February 25.
The deceased were Jagadeesh (45), a local, and Nideesh (17), a native of Allipade village. It is said that both the deceased together went into the pit located inside an open quarry to have a bath. Both the bodies have been retrieved and a large crowd has formed at the spot. Bantwal town police and fire brigade personnel visited the spot.
In the past, protests had been organized here alleging that an illegal quarry is operating in Narikombu village and that the operations there were damaging a house nearby. The quarry however continued to function without heeding to requests and protests. It is alleged that the current tragedy happened in the same quarry.
The locals stood their ground demanding the visit of the district deputy commissioner and the tahsildar and expressed their determination not to allow the bodies to be moved till this happens.
Bantwal town police who visited the spot have registered a case.
