Udupi, Jan 14: A rowdy sheeter named Vinod Shettigar, son of Raghuram and Indira Shettigar, residing near Korangrapady, was murdered between 8 and 9 am on Friday January 14 morning in the

Shettigar, a BBM degree holder, working as timber and plumbing contractor, was suspected to be an associate of underworld criminal, Ravi Poojary. He faces a number of cases including murder, attempts to murder, kidnap attempt, assault on policemen, etc. Several people were said to have been nursing enmity against the deceased.

Three other prisoners, Muttappa, Riaz, and Nagaraj, are suspected to have killed Shettigar. There are rumours that a knife had been hidden in a cake that was delivered to Nagaraj by his wife, which was used to kill Shettigar. The three, when questioned, reportedly told the policemen that Shettigar had assaulted them, and that they retaliated.

In the case of Pitty Nagesh, Kukkikatte, another rowdy sheeter, whose murder was attempted on July 20, 2010, the policemen had suspected the role of Shettigar, who was an arch rival of Nagesh. Shettigar and his henchmen were arrested in connection with this murder attempt.

The officials are investigating the case. Further details are yet to be received. Senior police officials visited the jail and took stock of the situation. This is the first time a murder of a prisoner has taken place in the district jail.

It clearly shows that the jail too is unsafe. Should arrest jailer as soon as possible and punish him.

There is much more than meets the eye. Some under-trial getting killed inside a jail or lock-up is rediculous. Police involvement or negligence cannot be ruled out. This surely needs to be inveistigated thoroughly.
