Mangalore, Jan 14: Doyen of Yakshagana art Kumble Sunder Rao asserted that with understanding the multiplicity facet of Yakshagana it should not be made limited as an art of coastal region. The interest shown by the government towards motivating the thriving art is not sufficient; hence there is every need for government to reflect Yakshagana as the art of our land.

He was delivering his presidential address at the Vidyarthi Yakshagana Sambhrama - 2011 a programme organized by Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy, Bangalore at Town Hall here on Friday January 14.

Speaking further he said the entire team of Yakshagana is important to fetch theatrical sensitivity among audience. Making note of Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat’s achievements in organizing student Yakshagana fest he lamented that MLA from Mangalore has not taken interest to support the unique art which depicts our culture.

He added that Yakshagana existed even in Ghats and Bayaluseeme regions once upon a time, but due to the negligence the authenticity in art vanished in that region and timely rejuvenation done for the art in undivided coastal districts resulted in current prosper status of the art.

The event was inaugurated by Mayor Rajani Dugganna. Dr Chinnappa Gowda, registrar of Mangalore University was the chief guest. He said that Yakshagana takes audience to a world of celebration and added learning process is important in the art rather than participating in competition.

The inaugural session was followed by staging of yakshagana on the theme 'Yekadashi Mahatme' by students of Moodbidri Alva's Educational Institution.

Various Yakshagana prasangas will be showcased till January 19 which will witness students participating from 19 education institutions.

Chandrashekar Shetty, member of Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy welcomed the gathering. Nithyananda Rao compered the programme.

Chandrashekar damle of sullya promotes yakshagana. Theatre and arts need to be encouraged by people..politicians need to focus first on state of affairs.. Irradication of malaria, sewage and waste disposal, pollution control, clean drinking water supply, maintain law and order and religious harmony. Of course art and culture of every denomination need to be preserved and promoted by having a separate cultural ministry.
