Udupi/Mangaluru, Mar 8: The International Women’s Day was celebrated at the Bhima Jewellers showroom in Udupi here on Tuesday, March 8.
The chief guest of the occasion, Savithri Krishnan, managing partner of the institution, inaugurated the programme, accompanied by women achievers Violet Femina, Thanula Tharun and Jasmine D’Costa.
Four prominent personalities from various domains were felicitated by Bhima Jewellers as part of women's day celebration.
Violet Femina, PSI, Women's Police Station receiving the honours, said, “Women are not at all weak. Every woman has her talent by birth but it is rarely recognised or encouraged. Women are working in every field. Why should a woman think that she is weak or unable to do something? Every woman has the power to stand against harassment but no one will express it. We will get harassed by anybody as long as we tolerate them. We can find our way to freedom. Hence, do not fear anybody. Police will be there with you. Let’s show our strength and do pro-social activities."
Renowned and successful entrepreneur, social worker Radha Das said , “I was brought up and trained under Kamalabai Chattopadhyaya., who was conferred with Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. Hence, I have helped many to do social service. I contested in the panchayat elections and won the poll five times independently. I wish all women should come forward to help people in society."
Jasmine L D’Costa, auto driver and social activist from Perampalli, said, "Felicitation is encouraging for me to do more work. If anyone is encouraged to do social work, we can achieve something. People's perception of an auto driver is different but are ones who rush to an emergency location more than an ambulance. I will extend help to old age people and widows. Women are strong, work more than men as she manages both work and home, and looks after her children."
Thanula Tharun, proprietor of Hosa Belaku Ashrama addressing the gathering, said, “Award increases the responsibility. Every woman has her own goal or dream and her family should be of support. Hosa Belaku started with 15 members and is now 70 strong. The homeless and the beggars are getting shelter at our ashram. I would like to request you to spare one percent of your income for social service. We were planning to serve 200 people in the coming days."
