Sonia Gandhi offers to 'step back' from top role, CWC turns down

New Delhi, Mar 13 (IANS): Congress' interim chief Sonia Gandhi offered to "step back" from her role as the Congress Working Committee met on Sunday for an over five-hour-long discussion on the fall-out of the recent Assembly polls but the party's highest decision authority did not accept it.

Sources said she indicated that she may step back if the CWC wants but the CWC did not endorse it.

The CWC reposed faith in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and every single member said that she should continue till organisational elections.

Party chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said: "The deliberations of the CWC is not open and many people spoke but the CWC statement is the final conclusion of the meeting."

The discussion also centred on the strengthening of the party and it was decided to hold a brain storming session soon.

All the state Incharges reported to the CWC about the results and CWC members analysed the outcome. "It was sincere discussion," said party General Secretary, Organisation, K.C. Venugopal.

The party accepted the election results and resolved to fight the BJP under Sonia Gandhi's leadership.

My frank opinion is that the Gandhis have been given enough time to prove themselves and they have proved that they do not measure up to the expectations. If no action is taken now, no action will ever be taken. It is high time the Gandhis leave. It will be good for them and certainly it will be better for the country. The old timers like Digvijay, Moily, Anthony would not like them to leave but they have proved time and again that they can't deliver the goods. Let them graciously make way for the likes of Shashi Tharoor, Jairam Ramesh, Anand Sharma, Manish Tiwari. It is extremely important to have a strong and viable opposition. In the absence of a strong opposition, the BJP will have its way and that would be disastrous for the country.

Though congress ruled India for most of the post independence years they continue to hit the axe on their own legs. They should change complete course 360 degrees and see how the AAP in ten years are fast becoming an alternate to BJP without indulging in appeasing minorities, corruption, and good governance.

to be fair to gandhis, ra ga had stepped out and was insisting that new leader should not be from Gandhi family.... but these jokers forced Sonia Gandhi to become President.... what else can you expect from people of the caliber of venugopal... In the present circumstance Jairam Ramesh might be the best bet.... eventhough he is not a mass leader, he could be strategist.... he has a clean unblemished public life.... time to send chidu, sidhu, Digvijay, gehlot, kamalnath and other old and stale stock to marg darshak mandal... another choice is Anand Sharma...

How long will it take to Gandhi's to realise that people have been turned against them by repeated lies and other stories by opposition and ruling parties. Congress will never win a election until they step down and all their sychophants realise the reality of the situation.

Congress members have still not given up their arrogance. Still thinking of themselves as a National Party. If the two states that have Congress CM fall, then Congress will skip being a regional party and go straight to being a Stateless Party.
