Mangalore, Jan 21:
The day belonged to St Aloysius College and Aviss teams at the ongoing DKCA-Century cricket tournament at Nehru Maidan here on Friday January 21. Both teams plundered their respective oppositions to snatch remarkable victories.

The first match was between St Aloysius College and Laxmi Memorial Education Trust. The former won the toss and chose to bat first, putting up a decent total of 157 for 5 in the stipiulated overs, half of which was scored by Daniel Sequeira (79). For Laxmi Memorial Sudhir Patel did a fairly good job picking up one wicket for 24 runs.

In reply, Laxmi Memorial batsmen could hardly be up to the task and the team was all out for 118 in 19.2 overs, with Alex's 34 being the top score. The star of the St Aloysius bowling attack was Kiran Clinton whose brilliant spell got him 8 wickets for just five runs. He was unanimously declared man of the match.

The latter part of the day saw Aviss Mangalore locking horns with Udupi Cricket Association (UCA) Mangalore. As usual the team winning the toss, this time UCA, elected to bat first but their batsmen failed to capitalise on the opportunity. Though they played out the entire innings, they could manage to put up only 102 for 8 on the board, with Akshay Shet (23) being the top scorer. For Aviss, Raghavendra scalped three wickets for 21 while Saif restricted the opposition, picking up 1 wicket for 11.

Aviss ripped the opposition apart in reaching the target in just 13.5 overs. Sunil's unbeaten blistering knock of 22 in 9 balls together with Sohan who too remained unbeaten at 34 and Harish (32), who gave a good start to the chase, meant that the rest of the players could relax in the dressing room while the team sailed easily to a 9-wicket victory.

Sohan was declared man of the match.

Sad to see the plight of Nehru Maidan. It has gone from bad to worse. If Cricketers from Mangalore have to play at the national level, then the basic things such as a turf pitch and a grass field is a must. Shocked to see the ground pictures after 2 decades and still the same....World has changed in these 2 decades, buildings, shopping malls have sprung up in Mangalore...nothing has been done for sports and the infrastructure. Same old story, this will continue forever....SAD!
