Odisha MLA, who ploughed SUV into a crowd, arrested


Bhubaneswar, Mar 22 (IANS): Odisha MLA Prasanta Kumar Jagadev, who rammed his SUV into a crowd at Banapur in Khurda district on March 12, was arrested here on Tuesday, police said.

Jagadev had been undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after being thrashed by an aggrieved mob after the incident. The Banapur police arrested him soon after he was discharged from the hospital, a police official said.

The Banapur police officials produced the Chilika MLA, who has been suspended, before the Bhubaneswar SDJM court this afternoon amid tight security. Later, he was taken to Banapur for further proceedings in the case, the official said.

Jagadev rammed his Land Rover Discovery into a crowd on March 12 morning near the Banapur block office where indirect election for the post of block Chairman was underway. Several people and policemen were injured in the incident.

Following this incident, the irate people thrashed the MLA severely, and he was first admitted in Tangi hospital and later shifted to the hospital in Bhubaneswar.
