Mangalore, Jan 24: "Veteran Konkani litterateurs, legendary singers, and story writers like Ravindra Kelekar, H V Kamath, Santhosh Kumar Gulvady, Wilfy Rebimbus and others have passed away in recent years. Hence, these kinds of workshops are essential in order to inspire the new generation of litterateurs and story writers to explore their talents," said Fr Francis Rodrigues, editor, 'Raknno,' Konkani weekly.

Fr Rodrigues was delivering the presidential address during the valedictory function of 'Preran – 2011' held at Shanti Kiran, Bajjody, on Sunday January 23.

"The themes of stories should be relevant to the times, unlike ice cream that melts in no time, food served by caterers which does not satiate the taste, and overly done make-up in beauty parlors which covers up ugly marks," he added.

Fr Rodrigues stressed on the need for the 4 D’s—desire, direction, dedication, and discipline—in order to become a good storywriter.

Konkani poet Titus Noronha, who was the chief guest, spoke on whether one should shape one’s own character in the story. He emphasised the need for a beginning, an end, and a great conclusion. In order to bring home the message he read two Kannada short stories – ‘Ondu Hoovina Kathe’ and ‘FM’ –extracted from the book ‘Jogi Kathegalu’ by well-known writer Jogi.

Dr William D’Silva, in the advanced story writing skills class held on Sunday morning, said that a story should cover three key factors - initial harmony, destruction, and restored harmony. "Abusing God is not justified, although there were a very few such story writers in Konkani in the past," he said.

A poets’ session was held on Sunday afternoon and veteran poet Valli Vogga moderated the session.

Story writers Bernard J D’Costa Kundapur and Richard John Pais presented their stories and discussions were held on the topic. Konkani film screening and appreciation was held on the night of Saturday January 22.

Veteran story writer Leo D’Souza had inaugurated ‘Preran – 2011’ on Saturday evening.

Speaking on the occasion, he reminisced over many such workshops conducted by Raknno in the past many years which gave a major boost to budding story writers. He stressed on the need for story writers as well as readers.

Veteran story writers Edy Netto and critic H M Pernal conducted the workshop on basics of story writing after the inaugural of the event.

Konkani Writers’ Forum president Paul Moras welcomed the gathering. Secretary H M Pernal delivered the introductory address. Vice-president Vitori Karkal and Tony Ferros compered the programme. Treasurer Joachim Pinto proposed the vote of thanks.

Its highly appreciating the support by Raknno weekly towards making konkani rich. It has been giving much support and opportunity for konkani writers since decades. Its sad that some criticize Raknno with baseless allegations. If Raknno was not there konkani writers would not have this much reach. All must thank Raknno and its management for their generous, helpful work.

Good programme by Konkani Writers Forum. I remember during Dr Edward Nazareth's leadership this forum had achieved so many things for Konkani. He is also a good story writer. Young writers should take him as model to write in Konkani. I hope above program has given light to the students on writing skills in konkani with inspiration from legend konkani writers of yesteryears and present ones, like Dr Edward. Congratulations to Dr Edward for bringing KWF to leading organisation for young generation writers in Konkani. There were so many stories and novels in konkani in the old age which are still give much pleasure of reading. Hope organisers help to bring the same harvest in konkani literature.

Nice effort. Very much needed in Konkani. It looks in the pics that only few young students appeared. Where are other writers? Should have concentrated for more current young writers, who could have got more enlightenment from such sessions.
