International Ties May Improve Due to Wikileaks: Medvedev

Davos, Jan 27 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Revelations of secret US diplomatic cables by whistle-blower website WikiLeaks may have a positive influence on international relations, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said.

"I believe that the Wikileaks affair should improve the international climate although a number of countries may consider these activities illegal," Medvedev said Wednesday at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Last year, the WikiLeaks website began releasing thousands of confidential documents related to US-led war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The website also published secret diplomatic cables sent to and from the US embassies across the globe, which contain, in particular, forthright comments about many world leaders.

The Russian president said that Wikileaks information on Russia contained nothing new. "I sometimes felt that most Wikileaks revelations were taken from general political websites," he added.

Medvedev said that the Internet connects billions today and no secret is secure against revelation.
