Udupi, Mar 28: Deputy commissioner (DC) of the district, M Kurma Rao, visited the board high school here where the SSLC examination is currently under way, and instilled a sense of confidence among the students.

He noted that the examination which has started today, will continue till April 11 and that over 14,000 students are appearing for the examination in 58 centres spread all over the district. He revealed that the district administration, department of education and the police have taken all measures for the successful conduct of the examination. He added that prohibitory orders up to a radius of 200 metres around the examination centres have been issued.

"The students are appearing for the examination for a brighter future. I have visited the examination centre and said encouraging words to the students. All steps have been undertaken as per the circular of the government. There is no room for any kind of confusion in the examination centres," he stated.

On the issue of statements given by Muslim leaders about giving importance to education, he said that this is a good development in the district. "Leaders of all the communities have said that education should be given paramount importance. We held meeting with the Muslim leaders. They also said their first preference is for education," he stated.

Kurma Rao said that the said circular has clearly spelt out the methodology of conducting the examinations and that all steps as detailed in the said circular have been undertaken.

Confidence boosting is a good thing especially during tense times. When all the Muslim leaders are on side and give importance to tjhis crucial stage in life which will make or break their future, it is senseless for those very very few that had to be sent back for refusing to shed their hijab and their pride - they will be without a SSLC pass certificate without which they cannot go forward and will be good as home makers for their husbands and children.
