Mangalore: Mixed Reaction in District for Report on Church Attacks

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jan 29: The final report of the Justice B K Somashekhara Commission of Inquiry that went into the church attacks, which took place in the city and elsewhere during the year 2008, has received both flowers and brickbats in Karnataka coast. While Hindu outfits in general have welcomed the report, the others have preferred to differ from the Commission’s findings.

Divisional president of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Prof M B Puranik, has welcomed the report. “The report has vindicated our stand that pro-Hindu organizations had not abetted the church attacks,” he commented. He also said that it has been proved that efforts are going on in the state for converting Hindus into other religions. “Irrespective of which government rules the state and the country, the Hindu outfits will fight this menace within the legal parametrers, and work for serving the interests of the Hindus,” Puranik stressed.

Dakshina Kannada district Congress vice-president, Ivan D’Souza, said that the Commission’s report is prejudicial. He pointed out that the Commission has failed to either pinpoint the culprits behind the church attacks, or recommend steps against the perpetrators. His other observation related to the failure of the Commission to spell out legal steps to be taken against Mahendra Kumar, the then state convener of Bajrang Dal. “While the report has clearly stated that Roman Catholics are not involved with religious conversions, it has not said the purpose for which the attacks were carried out. The report, while admitting that the policemen had illegally entered the churches, has not recommended any steps against them. This report aims at protecting the state government,” he criticized.

District vice-president of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Jagadish Shenava, has welcomed the Commission’s conclusion that Bajrang Dal had not played a role in the church attacks. Divisional convener of Bajrang Dal, Sharan Pumpwell, too welcomed the Commission’s finding that his organization was not behind the church attacks.

Sushil Noronha, former secretary of Mangalore diocese, said that the Commission has gone against its own interim report, and brought out a report that favours the state government.

Prashant Jatanna, president of Indian Christians Union, noted that the Commission, which conducted the hearing of cases in a way that was acceptable to the Christians, has manufactured a report under the directions of the state government. He said that Mahendra Kumar had claimed that several BJP and Sangh Parivar leaders were involved with church attacks, but wondered about the fact that the Commission has absolved Bajrang Dal from the attacks. “By giving a clean chit to policemen, the Commission has supported injustice,” he felt.

I absolutely agree with Adil. The thirst for power is quenched with these riots, which act as fuel to fire.Power corrupts, inevitably. We must stay united & not shame Tulunadu by being petty like some people. All these organisations will have to pay for their crimes one way or the other, but let's not be judges ourselves & condemn anyone to hell, Judith. We're Christians and that's what we stand for-love & brotherhood.I am sad that M'Lore is getting ruined by all this.I pray that all these people get good jobs to spend their time, and not be devil's puppets. So, jai ho.. We are disappointed that the Enquiry Commn has failed to name and pin point the attackers who attacked the Churches.
    1. The attacks were pre-meditated and spontaneous. This could have been done only by an Organisation and not an individual.
    2. The Intellegence Department either was extremely inefficient or in spite of their knowledge which was given to the Government, the Government has deliberately ignored it knowing fully well such attacks were forthcoming. THEREFORE, the Govt. is fully responsible for these attacks.

    3. Three types of evidences were given to the Commission by the Victims/different Organs including the Karnataka Missions Network, Mangalore, myself being its Chairman, viz.a)Oral evidence, b)Documentary evidence & c)Telecast Clippings In all these evidences, it was abundantly made clear the direct involvement of Bhajrang Dal Activists/police supporting the Church Attackers. How could the Commission could so blatantly ignore all these evidences/his own interim report and give clean chit to the Govt./Bhajrangdal and the Police, unless there is some hidden agenda or the pressure from the authorities?
    4) The Commission could not establish the false allegation that the book "Satyadarshini", which was the centre of controversy and projected as the cause of Church Attacks.
5)The Commn has failed to prove the false allegation of conversion by force/coersion.
6)The findings of the Commn truthis just an eyewash, deliberately closing its eyes to the truth.

Either oldman Somashekar has lost mental balance to judge what is wrong or right or he is corrupt like most politicians or does not know law and our country's Constitution.

Most equiry commisions are useless that is waste of time and tax payer's money. In this it cost 2.5 Crores !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If enquiry commisions appointed on recommendations of opposition parties then its report may prove fairly good.

    Main problem is this.
Most people don't realize that there are different "castes" in Christianity.
Satya Darshini is NOT a Catholic group. They have nothing to do with Catholics. But unfortunately illiterate goons of sangh parivar targetted the churches who were innocent in this. Hindus and Catholics have lead decades of strife free life. As Mr Kunder pointed out, Christians have rendered yeoman service to the community. Yet they are being targetted.
Another point is people confuse conversion with "forced conversion whatever" that means. For example if a Hindu genuinely embraces Christianity as per Indian constitution, even that will not go down well. But the issue is that money is being given for conversion. Such conversions are bad and we also agree.
So please understand facts before making opinions.

In the past parliment election everyone assumed that people of Mangalore will teach lesson to BJP for their act.

But the result was shocking.... This shows the mentality of people of mangalore.

The incident has left with parallel line with communities which will never merge.

BJP supporters here blame Christian community for conversion but fail to acknowledge their service to humanity. I would like to enlighten them that if many of us could get good education and cheaper health facilities in Mangalore it was because of Christian missionaries.

I have experienced that there is no discrimination of caste, creed or religion when you require admission to educational institutions or hospitals run by Christian missionaries but same thing can not told about some of the Hindu institutions.

Way back in 1975, I joined St. Aloysius College for science stream but my childhood friend wanted to go for commerce in one of the best Hindu institution. He had very good marks but the seat was denied because he was not belonging to particular community and cut off marks were very high for students from other community. Finally he joined St. Aloysius college, got rank both in PUC as well as B. Com and he (a Hindu) was adjudged as a best student of the college and was felicitated by the President of India Mr. Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy in the Centenary year 1980. This is the true story and anybody can check the records of St. Aloysius College.

I ask Sangh Parivar people if this could have been possible in any Hindu Institution? Only caste plays the role in these places. Can Sangh Parivar people fight this injustice?

Sangh Parivar people are using Hindus only for vote bank politics and not bothered about Hindus particularly poor and weak.

@ Hamid, unfortunately my brother, yes Tipu did destroy a good number of the 27 churches in Mangalore and few others in North Kerala. Idgah on light house hill road was built from the stones of St. Milagres Church. One Church was protected by the true Hindus from complete destruction. Even today that Church honors those whose families were involved in this valiant act of protecting it.

By the way, People are falling prey to venomous words spoken by people like Nayak Mamu. We should reject everything and treat the other as another human being, another Indian, another brother.

God is same for all religions Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and any other believers in God, the Temple of God is sacred, whether it is Hindu Temple, Church or Mosque, a prayer place, place to communicate with God. No religion has the moral or legal right to discrete the “Temple of God”. Those who do take upon themselves to discrete the Temple of God, accept the wrath of Almighty. Political parties and political leaders must be secular and promote religious tolerance and harmony, instead of propagating prejudicial climate. There are festivals and Utsavs why can the political leaders promote common religious festival day? Take the example of Our Lady of Valankany-

I saw Hindu worshipers kneeling down in the church and praying for their peace. Likewise, Darmastal, a place or worship is well known for all people. I saw Hindu people attending St Lawrence Church and praying along with Christians. Why our political leader can be evenhanded and secular in their duties to promote peace and tranquility?

    GOOD JUDGEMENT ..
as a proud christin & indian i am pleased with judgement .reason :

    1) its not only bajrang dal , also some machieries wer involved in conversion forcefully or monitary way (will never accept it openly but we all know) ..and that was the main cause for all problems. (of couse not all machiery wer invloved in it but every chrch was attacked by bajrang)

    2) its true that bajrang dal was involved in church attack in first phase..on second and third phase , it look like some one realy want to take advantage of christian sentiments by attacking church & blame ruling party ..(dnt know really which relegius or party behind it).

    3) if the commission punishes bajrand dal members in this case...they will bring conversin raw once again in lime light..and once again we can witness more church attack not by bajrang itself..by party which is utilising christnas sentiments...

so indeed its clever and good judgement to keep the mangalore in peace full manner.

Christians must be thankful to BJP Govt. for not fixing them and alleging that the attack was planned & executed by Christians themselves to defame BJP. See how all the recent bomb blast even though carried out by RSS Sanghparivar, more than 100 innocent Muslim youths have been fixed and languishin in various jails across the country.

Dear christian brothers, this is the only Test dose for your community to terrorise, more lethal poisonous plans with the Sanghparviar to deomonise you (like they domonised muslims). Wake up and be united unlike Muslims.

It was clearly an act of Nepotism and political conspiracy by BJP. The Church Attacks in Mangalore was well planned by BJP and its inner allies. The Police were totally impotent during the attacks carried out by Hindu outfits. No FIR was booked on the real culprits, therefore the Somashekara Report is null & void due to the fact that it has no relevance on the barbaric attacks. Overall BJP has brought total disgarce to Hindu Religion by attacking the places of worship belong to minority Christians. Sooner or later the Sinners will be devastated by the Almighty God.
