Adarsh Scam: CBI FIR Names Ashok Chavan

New Delhi, Jan 29: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan figures among 13 individuals named in the FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Adarsh society scam on Saturday.

Former Major General M M Wanchoo, R C Thakur and Kaniah Lal Gidwani are other noted names listed as main conspirators in the scam. The case was registered after the CBI last week received flak from the Bombay High Court for its tardy probe in the case.

Earlier reports were not clear if the name of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan figured in the FIR registered at the special designated court in Mumbai.  The agency had registered a preliminary enquiry into the scam in November last year. The decision to register a case was taken after seeking a legal opinion on the evidence which had favoured registering of a case against some people for allegedly forging the documents and abusing official position.

During hearing of a petition in the Adarsh case, a division bench of Justices B H Marlapalle and U D Salvi had asked CBI why it had not registered the case. "It has been more than two months since CBI has been conducting a preliminary inquiry into the case. Why have you (CBI) not registered FIR as yet?," it had asked.

Two former army chiefs Gen Deepak Kapoor and Gen N C Vij and ex-navy chief Admiral Madhavendra Singh owned flats in the scam-hit society building in upscale Colaba. However, the former top chiefs have claimed that they have now surrendered the flats.

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests had on January 16 ordered demolition of the building within three months, holding it as "unauthorised" and built in violation of the spirit of coastal regulations.

Apart from violating the CRZ norms, the society is alleged to have got clearances from various authorities through dubious means. The plush housing society, built on prime defence land has been constructed in alleged violation of rules. The building was originally meant to be a six-storey structure to house Kargil war heroes and their kin but was later extended to 31 floors without mandatory permission.

Chavan had resigned as chief minister in the wake of the scam.

All those who support Congress, referring the case to CBI doesn't solve the problem. What happened to Bofors case? What happened to Bhopal gas tragedy case? Anybody brought to justice in those? Same way this one also will go in vein. CBI is directed by Congress, it won't keep a step further from what is been said by the chief of Congress.

Mr.Ismail and Abu Mohammed i am not supporting the scams in karanataka. But i pointed that the media is biased.Media should be impartial.whenever the incident of killing, fight, scam, scandal, attack on some places ,the media highlights and identify that person with the party name or organisation he belongs to.But when the similar incidents done by persons related to congress then the media is not doing the same treatment as it do for others.

All the culprits have to be brought to the book and stringent punishment to be given.

Congress should give free hand in the investigations and should not protect anybody involved in this mess.

People will get confidence only when justice is delivered.

Shetty’s are supposed to be smart. Anyways, Chavan never admitted he was guilty, in spite of that he was asked to quit and CBI inquiry was initiated. Congress is a responsible government. Now at least you will understand why whole India is after Kar Nataka?
