Udupi, Jan 29: In a tragic accident that occurred in Thekal Kote near Katpady NH 17 on Saturday January 29 at around 2.30 pm, three-year-old Rizwin died on the spot after a diesel tanker ran over him.

It is said that a tanker ran over the bike on which his father Rafiq and grandfather Gafoor were travelling. They also sustained injuries. All are residents of Mallar near Kaup. A heavy vehicle first hit the tanker and three-fourths of the diesel spilled on the national highway posing danger to other vehicles. The diesel spilled after the cap opened on impact. Immediately, the fire squad rushed to the spot and averted a major tragedy.

The heavy vehicle was plying from Gujarat to Mangalore. Localites gathered at the spot were furious about the district administration for not taking any action against such heavy vehicles. There are also complaints that such vehicles are causing traffic blocks regularly. A case has been registered..

Deepak is right in saying that the infrastructure needs to be improved dramatically. What is the use of having SEZs etc. etc. when there is no provision to transport heavy machines/equipment from other places. It is high time this killer highway is converted into a one way 3/3 one!!

these truck drivers and bus drivers dont have a drivig sense. they almost cover up both the lanes.they are not even bothered about other small vehichle. most of the times they dink and drive necessary actions had not been taken by police. if they catch also they pay bribe of Rs100
to them and police ask them to leave. roads are also not in good condition. as per density of vehichles in this we need 6 lanes highway where as NHAI strtd the work on 4 ane now. god have 2 save our country

Friends ,Its a madness to drive on the highway, specially these trucks use all the lanes,Safety is never guaranteed as long as these road hogs, and stupid drivers don not use single lane. What about taking matter in our hands ? like lets use people power,Police and transport ministers are sleeping ! No one cares ! How long should a person wait for the Justice? how many more will lose their life ? Wake up..please lets do something for our city,Personally i get into fight almost every time i drive on these highway, just last week in single day i had close encounter of near accident( fatal-2) on this road to udupi,

The concerned Auhorities should take immediate action against such heavy, dangerous vehicles. The timings should be fixed for these vehicle's movement on road. Litterely parking near the main road side should be fined/penalised. Vehicles from Gujarat to Mangalore - they can use the alterate like cargo trains, ships etc.
