Karnataka set to make guideline for slaughterhouses, likely to trigger row

Bengaluru, Apr 2 (IANS): The Karnataka government is all set to make guidelines for slaughter houses to adopt the 'stunning' method to kill animals. Though the government is presently giving a diplomatic statement, the party is preparing for implementation, say sources. This move is expected to create further furour in the state, which is already facing the heat due to call for ban on halal cut meat.

Minister for Animal Husbandry Prabhu Chouhan on Saturday said that he would look into the demand made by animal lovers who have written to the department that 'stunning' should be made compulsory in slaughterhouses.

Prabhu Chouhan

'Stunning' is a process which ensures that the animal is made unconscious to pain before being killed in the slaughterhouse.

Prabhu Chouhan said he would take a call on making 'stunning' compulsory in slaughter houses. "Stunning has not been made compulsory as of now and no order as such is being issued from the department. The letter says not to permit halal cuts, I will verify," he said.

Sources in the BJP said that the party is mulling to make the guideline mandatory as it would not allow halal and jhatka processes while slaughtering the animal illegal. If this happens, there would be a huge crisis like situation in the state as anything against halal would not go down well with minorities.

The central government has recommended a 'stunning' method under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act for slaughter houses. Umapathy, Joint Director of Animal Husbandry Department has stated that the department has received many complaints by animal activists in this regard. Despite the guideline, the slaughterhouses are not following rules, he said.

The case could be booked under IPC as well as the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act if slaughterhouses do not follow rules.

Even the public could also book a case in this regard. The shop owners will be fined for the first and for the second offence, they can be jailed. Presently, the fine amount is Rs 50. It is being appealed to increase it to Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. The present imprisonment period is 6 months to 3 years. It has also been demanded to increase the imprisonment period, he explained.

According to fresh scientific opinion, halal — the method of slaughter that kills the animal with a deep cut across the neck — produces meat that's more tender, stays fresh longer, and is less painful to the animal than say, the jhatka method that involves severing its head in one powerful blow

Exactly. let me add one more to that - mangana kaiyalli manikya. For the last 70 years long they were enjoying sitting in opposition bench. now, they got a chance to rule the country/state. They are totally confused. They made a mess in such a way, which will be difficult for the new government to rectify in future.

Has anyone heard of Al Kabeer products, whose owner is Hindu and exports 100% Halal beef? As of now, all Arab countries will ban the import of non-halal goods from India.

This specimen is pouring fuel to the fire! "However, a ban on halal or kosher is not just anti-Islam or anti-semitic, it is also anti-market as the global halal market is estimated to be worth- 1.6 trillion dollars. While the global kosher beef market is expected to reach $248 billion by 2025. Interestingly, nazis had prohibited slaughter without stunning or anesthesia under a law that was passed on April 21, 1933. Some experts believe, the animals are bound to feel the pain of slaughter with or without stunning. For starters, stunning itself is painful as most slaughterhouses make animals unconscious by exposing them to electric shock or firing a bolt against the animal's head. Captive bolts go wrong many times and animals bleed to death. Chickens are mostly gassed. In short, there is no humane way to kill an animal."

Which animal activists are they talking about. These people are not bothered about humans dying a slow death of hunger and thirst, small children and girls being raped and killed. Stunning or not either way the animal will die. This is just lame reason to harass the minorities. Useless ministers running the country.

Useless unproductive statements and waste of everybody's time. As a Hindu or Christian there is no problem to consume halal meat or kosher. Focus on development and jobs , make in India, instead of this pointless propaganda. Mr. Bommai you are an engineer. Please apply logic and improve Karnatakas economy. Make a halal certification agency a Governmental one and the Government can earn the certification revenue. So all your concerns can be addressed.
