Some Attacks on Churches Aimed at Defaming Govt: Panel

Some attacks on churches aimed at defaming govt: Panel

Bangalore, Feb 2 (DHNS): The Justice B K Somasekara Commission of Inquiry, which probed the attacks on churches, on Tuesday released details of each case and named those responsible for the attacks in some cases.

As many as 57 churches and prayers halls were attacked in nine districts in the State in 2008.

Referring to St Mary’s Church in Kolar, the Commission ruled out the involvement of any Hindu organisation. The allegations of conversion are true, but they were not the ground for the attack. It was a deliberate attempt by some local group or political force to create evidence to link the attack to other such incidents involving churches, and thereby demoralise or demolish the ruling BJP government.

On the attack on St James Church at Mariyannapalya in Bangalore, the Commission confirmed there was indeed an attack. But it said attempts by Christians to convert people in the area, and resistance by the members of Adi Kaveri Trust of Chittiappa and local Hindus were the reasons for the incident.

The Church personnel did not cooperate with the police in preventing the attack. There appears to be illegal acquisition of public property by both the Church personnel and the Chittiappa group, which requires a serious inquiry, the report said.

Legal steps sought

The government and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike should take legal steps to remove all encroachments and illegal planting of Christian Crosses, besides illegal constructions in the Kalvari Betta area, the Commission recommended.

In case of the Holy Name of Jesus Church at Rajarajeshwarinagar, the report said the attack was sporadic -- carried out by either a passerby or by some miscreants to create evidence against the ruling party.

There are indications of corruption in the City Corporation, the report said. The commissioner should uniformly regularise any irregularity in licensing, etc, regarding constructions, especially of this church, subject to rules, the report added.

A make-believe attempt

In the case of St Anthony New Church, Yedanahalli, the report said the attack was a make-believe aimed at linking it other similar incidents.

The main culprits appear to be Father Santhosh, David and his men and two police constables, B M Nagaraj and B P Nagendra Kumar. The CoD police failed in their investigation to locate the culprits, the report said.

Somasekara defends his report

The Justice B K Somasekara Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday said its final report on the church attacks was prepared after a detailed and transparent inquiry but was misinterpreted by a few.

Justice Somasekara, in a written clarification, stated there was no need for  Christain petitioners to be apprehensive about the direct or indirect involvement of politicians, the BJP, the Sangh Pariwar and the State government in the attacks.

Every bit of inference and findings of the report was based on evidence and elaborate discussion of all contentions presented before the Commission. The final report should be read in continuation of the interim report submitted to the government in February last, the inquiry panel chief said.

He said there was no lapse on the part of the Commission and any fair comments were welcome. “But all such expressions by anybody shall be subject to legal consequences under Section 10A (1) of the Commission of Inquiry Act. Ignorance of the law is no excuse; and this will apply to all,” he said.

Church attack probe slams Sangliana too

BANGALORE: Reacting to the adverse comments to the report of the Justice B K Somasekhara Commission probing the church attacks in Karnataka, the panel on Tuesday released exhaustive details of its investigation.

With regard to the attack on Saint James Church at Mariyannapalya in Bangalore, the panel said it did take place.

"But police-officer -turned- politician H T Sangliana interfered with the Amrithahalli police to take appropriate action whenever there were complaints by local Hindus but without success. There appears to be a grabbing of public property by both church people and Chittiappa of Sri Adi Kaveri Trust which requires a serious inquiry and appropriate action,'' he said.

The panel said there is no evidence of fraudulent or compulsory conversions in the area and by the persons of the church. Also, the Sangh Parivar had no role in the attack and it was a purely a local problem. The church should provide its own security and cooperate with the local police.

Reacting to the panel's observations about him, vice-chairman of National Commission for Minorities H T Sangliana said: "The charges are absolutely baseless and concocted. If I have interefered with the police, let them furnish proof with time and date. I was not given a chance by the panel to contest the allegation.''

At least naming a few culprits could have given Mr. Somashekara some credit.People of all faiths will disbelieve his story. I spoke to a bystander of my intention of speaking to this lady and asking her if she needed any help. To my utter disbelief, the bystander looked sympathetically at me and said" do you really want to get into the conversion controversey. just look away" sad to say I looked away and I know I am guilty in front of God.

It is high time the whole issuse must be investigated by CBI and sure the real truth will be revealed including the involvement of Police.

One important lesson to be learnt from this incident and inquiry is that, when it comes to justice solid evidence plays an important role . It is a right time for all religious communities to protect their places of worship and properties using affordable security systems like CCTV's , Intruder Alarm's..etc. This will really help our law enforcement agencies in arresting the culprits . If nothings happens, these evidences can be handed over to the media , who will very happily broadcast them 24x7 untill some action is taken.

Somashekara is retarded. Anyway we all know the truth and we don't need a foolish, biased and hand-in-glove BJP commission tell us that.
But what I appreciate is the comments of fellow Hindus denouncing the commission. I see their true Hinduism which and Patriotism and peace-loving attitude here. These are the Indians who give meaning to being an Indian more than the religion each of us are affiliated to. We don't need Christians who convert for the sake of money and inducements.

For me, these are half-baked Christians. It is rather a change of heart and love for Christ that needs to attract one to Christ on their own and not by force. Well I often laugh when people claim conversion but not one has been proved in a court of law.

Please stop the blame game, spare the poor retired Justice. Justice did his duty and gave his report based on the inquiry carried out by him and his team. I don’t think it is his fault that he failed to satisfy you. The real problem remains with your brothers and sisters, who lodged complaint against Sangh Parivar, without providing proper proof, all they did was acted on the basis of rumors, TV Channels reports, statements made by Opposition Parties and anti BJP/ Sangh Parivar elements.

Now report is on public domain if you feel justice denied it is your duty to compile all evidence, facts and figure and give it to your Lawyer who is on board with you people throughout and fight a legal battle against the injustice, after all this is a investigation report not the court judgment.

Justice Somashekara, honestly you do not deserve the title 'Justice' not because you have betrayed Christians, but, because you have betrayed 'Justice', you have betrayed your conscience and your soul. Just read few lines about Judas & you will see him in you. Now your conscience has started pricking you because of the peace, silence and quietness of Christian community even when they know you have betrayed them.

Now, you are ashamed even to face the mirror, because every wrinkle on your face shows you the corruption and you start to hate yourself. Somehow, your conscience doesn't allow you to keep silent on the biased report & you will have many restless nights to spend in fear. I wish you read the comments of Christian brothers and sisters who have never cursed you, but, always have forgiven you - as we are taught to forgive our enemy. This the the valueable asset of Christianity poured upon us by our Saviour "Prince of Peace". May God forgive you.
