Mangaluru: Hijab students prefer Shariyat colleges, Muslim institutions

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 7: The Muslim girl students studying in government colleges are planning to join private educational institutions run by Muslims and some others are preparing to go to Shariyat colleges.

Even some private institutions have prohibited the wearing of Hijab inside classrooms after the order of the state government as well as the verdict pronounced by the high court. It is estimated that around 10000 Muslim girl students have stayed away from colleges due to these orders.

Most of the Muslim girl students, who used to wear Hijab and Burqa while coming to college have agreed to remove those while in classrooms. Many are even writing SSLC exams. Some are not attending. But the education department officials are not sure of the reason for their absence.

“Around 400 Muslim girl students are not attending colleges in the district of Udupi, where the controversy started. However, all are writing the SSLC examination. More than 100 students did not attend the final year examination of first PU. Most have not attended practical examinations of second PU. We have to see what will be their fate in final examinations,” said social worker Yasin Kodi Bengre.

Muslim girl students, who have strict orthodox culuture at home have not attended the examinations. Most are planning to join nearby Muslim managed institutions. However, some might stop education as they will not be able to bear the high fee charged by private institutions.

Shakir Haji, secretary, Markazul Huda Women’s College, Kumbra, Puttur says, “We are getting lots of queries by Muslim girl students to join our institution. Many have demanded to join PUC, degree and Shariyat colleges. However, without the permission of the government, we cannot add any department or number of seats. So if more students apply, seats cannot not be provided.”

“Some have asked for lateral admissions half way through the academic year. We have categorically denied such requests. Some are saying that they will join from next academic year. There are rules for that also. In PUC, we have approval for only one section. To start one more, approval of the government is required. So there will be a huge shortage of seats,” says Shakir Haji.

Government must be careful in giving further licences to such schools... Even if given strict monitoring of the activities of staff and students must be carried out... Any smoke has to be tackled at bud before it engulfs the entire arena...

Thank God, they want to go to colleges as we understand. While we are at it, what are Shariyat colleges? Are women allowed to attend colleges according to Shariyat? If the answer is yes, why Taliban is having trouble starting high schools for girl kids?

@Mayya, for your information, Islam permits educating women. Actually Islam encourages education irrespective of gender. First Quranic verse reveled is “Read, in the name of Your Lord, who created, created man from a clot. Read! And Your Lord is the most bountiful”. Many organizations claim that they follow Islam but actually they don’t follow the teachings of Islam. Taliban is one among such organizations.

Dear Abu Eesa, Mangalore, I liked your take on education for women and agree with your take because, (a) Islam arrived in India much earlier than in Afghanistan. (b) Muslim women went to schools and colleges here just like followers of other religion. Part of the reason for that could be that world media gives more airtime to the plight of women and their education in Afghanistan and completely ignores the fact that a significant higher number of women with belief in Islam go to schools, colleges and go on to make successful career in India and let us not forget Pakistan too. However, the fact that Taliban derive their ideas from Barelivi sect of Islam with origin in India cannot be completely ignored and I hope more people in India have your take on education of women in your holy book.

@Abu Easa, Managalore, Yeah offcourse we all know that the first word in your scripture is "READ"....then why 90% of your community is still uneducated????? 1500 years are not enough for your religion to grow educated???? I think Christians are doing what you supposed to do....building Educational institutions and Hospitals and they themself are well educated. I think the real followers of your religion are ISIS and Taliban. They really follow what is written in your scripture. Hate, seperatism, sex, money and authority(power)

They would be safer there. In view of the current situation, the government should allow more sections to be added in these schools. Furthermore, private Muslim institutions should provide scholarships to those in need.
