Mangaluru: First Ayush sports medicine centre of state in city to start next month

Mangaluru, Apr 14: The first Ayush sports medicine centre in the state has been allotted to the city and will begin functioning from May. 

The first centre of this kind in South India has already been started in Thrissur of Kerala state and Mangaluru's centre will be the second among the southern states of India.

A grant of Rs 2.50 crore has been released in the beginning. 

Recruitment of seven doctors, therapists, nurses and purchase of required equipment will be done soon. This complex is being constructed at Urwa around Mangala stadium, which has a swimming pool, running track and indoor stadium. Right now, on a temporary basis, the centre will begin working in district Ayush hospital. 

The centre was approved by union minister for Ayush, responding to an appeal made by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and MLA Vedavyas Kamath.

The inauguration will be done by a sports celebrity according to the information shared by district Ayush officer Dr Mohammed Iqbal. 

Mohammed Iqbal says that various therapies to maintain physical fitness of sports persons, ayurvedic medicine, Yoga and naturopathy, Unani, Sidda and Homeopathy medicines are available. Excepting surgery all other treatments are available in Ayudh for injuries to knee, shoulder joint and ligaments. 

Dr Iqbal said, "Some sports persons take steroids during practice in order to strengthen their nerves, muscles and joints and get tested positive for dope test during competitions. Ayush has got equally strong natural medicines that will keep a sportsperson fit."
