Mangalore, Feb 5:
A successful and a first-of-its kind laser surgery for cancer patients was performed at A J Hospital & Research Center, Kuntikana here recently, revealed Dr Prashanth Marla, medical director of the hospital at a press meet here on Saturday February 5.

A 56-year-old male, Ramesh Naik who works in a revenue department, Sirsi had a history of hoarse voice, difficulty in breathing and noisy breathing (stridor)  and was seen by Dr Sheetal D Jain, consultant ENT and Laser Surgeon.

He was diagnosed to have malignancy (cancer) of vocal cords (voice box). Total laryngectomy (where voice box is removed completely and patients loses his voice), radiotherapy and laser surgery are the options for this type of throat cancer.

Laser surgery is the most recent advancement and is performed only in few centers across the world, wherever expertise is available. Dr Sheetal D Jain performed this complex laser surgery on Ramesh Naik and now the patient is totally free from cancer and is able to speak like any other normal person.

Another patient Biranna from Ankola who hails from agrarian family has gained his voice through this surgery. This is first of its kind and most advanced surgery done in our coastal region.

Being able to speak in communicable voice is the advantage of laser surgery apart from being cured from cancer. Many patients have undergone laser surgery in A J Hospital & Research Center.
