Mangaluru, Apr 20: A couple and a few staff had a miraculous escape after stationed container truck moved backwards and hit the toll gate structure at Talapady following technical problem in handbrake.
It is gathered that the driver had parked the truck and been for tea. But, due to technical problem, the truck moved backwards for about a kilometre. The incident took place on reported on Tuesday night.
The truck belonging to Ganapathi Logistics was transporting refrigerators from Delhi to Kochi. Driver Jaiveer Singh (60) had parked the vehicle on the national highway, crossing the Talapady toll gate.
Unfortunately, the parked lorry started to move backwards, hit a bike, an auto-rickshaw, toll sensor pole, security chair and finally stopped after hitting the toll gate’s retaining wall.
Toll gate staff Sathish Naralapadilu and Ashok and a couple who were travelling to Kerala on a scooter escaped miraculously.
The driver informed that as there was a technical problem in the truck’s handbrake which might have led to the mishap. A loss of around Rs 1 lac has been reported.
“The incident took place at around 9.30 pm. As it is Ramzan month, not many vehicles and people were near the toll gate. If there was presence of more vehicles and public, this would be a big tragedy,” said toll gate PRO Baskar Talapady.
