Udupi: Shankar Poojary Elected ZP President, Jyothi S Shetty Vice-president

Udupi, Feb 9: Katpady Shankar Poojary was elected president of zilla panchayat and Jyothi S Shetty vice-president during the elections held at ZP auditorium, here on Wednesday February 9. Both are BJP candidates and will reign for a term of twenty months.

BJP leaders congratulated the duo on their victory.

MLAs K Raghupati Bhat and K Lalaji R Mendon, former zilla panchayat president Gladys D’Almeida, Udupi BJP president Uday Kumar Shetty, deputy councillor Bharati Chandrashekar, former councillor Somashekar Bhat, zilla panchayat member Ananta Movady, Kaup block BJP president Naveen Shetty Kuthyar, zilla panchayt member Upendra Nayak and others congratulated the winners.

Addressing the media persons after the elections, Shankar Poojary said that he would lay more emphasis on drinking water supply, cleanliness, infrastructural facilities, garbage disposal etc. He would make his honest efforts in resolving many issues of the coast, Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ), sea erosion and so on, he assured, and added that officers of various government departments will be taken into confidence on developmental issues.

Shankar Poojary also thanked the state higher education minister Dr V S Acharya, veteran BJP leaders M Somashekar Bhat, A G Kodgi, MP Sadanand Gowda, all zilla panchayat members and party activists.

Shankar Poojary:

Fifty-four-year-old Shankar Poojary was a BJP activist since 1980. He was honoured with the Udupi district Rajyotsava Award for his multi-faceted personality. He worked as a reporter of Hosa Diganta, Kannada daily and was a spokesperson for district BJP. He is also a Tulu-Kannada playwright.

Jyothi S Shetty:

Forty-four-year-old Jyothi S Shetty was elected for the first time from Mandarti zilla panchayat constituency.  She served Billady gram panchayat and contested as an independent candidate in zilla panchayat election in 1995.  She was actively involved in literacy drive in Saibarakatte and Mandarty locality and also served as president of Kokkarne Mahila Sahakari Sangh.
