Mangalore, Feb 10:
As many as 600 residents of Bikarnakatte in the city took out a procession from Nanthoor to Bikarnakatte, which culminated near the Infant Jesus arch, in protest against the long-pending and haphazard execution of road works of national highway 13, on Thursday February 10.

Political leaders were conspicuous by their absence during the protest march that began at 10 am, and the locals have termed it as a voluntary bandh. The work on this road, which was scheduled to be completed in the month of December last year, is still pending, resulting in thick dust clouds rising out of the road, which have been causing breathlessness and other related problems for the local people. Crushed stones spread on loose soil are jutting out on this stretch of the road, and the stones fly like shrapnel when wheels of vehicles move on them, endangering the lives of the pedestrians and drivers of neighbouring vehicles.

The shops and commercial complexes in the area remained closed, and the people came together to voice their grievances against the apathy of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the district administration towards their plight.

Vasanth Master, speaking to Daijiworld, said that the authority has tried to hoodwink the people by just sprinkling water along the road for controlling of the dust. But, after two days, this drama that was also stopped, he claimed. Lack of proper drainage system in the area has given rise to a fear among the residents about the possibility of artificial flooding of the areas located adjacent to the national highway.

The local people also had submitted an appeal to the Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC) on January 31 this year, duly explaining to him the difficult situation prevailing in the area. The media also had given wide coverage to the grievances of these people. The DC had, at that time, assured them that the road works would be completed within ten days.

The protestors have warned that they will lay siege the NHAI office located at Valencia in the city, if the road work is not completed within a month’s time.

RonRaj Angola Africa, Bajpe i agree to your point that our loksabha MP's didnt work, but even Mr Poojary was the member of Rajyasabha why didnt he work towards that as UPA govt was there in the central?? One thing the four lane project was sanctioned in the year 2005 and during that it was UPA govt ruling in the central not NDA.

Taking advantage of this opportunity let me ask some questions to you where the funds flown, which was released for the road construction since 20 years in the MP Quota, how many new permits are issuing per day in the Mangalore RTO. Where is the money going which was collected from the owner of the thousand existing vehicle only in M’lore

Some commentators are expressing their views without reading & understanding the topic.People are protesting for better roads either by UPA govt.or state administration,it doest matter. We cant expect Italian Madam or National highway authorities to come to Mangalore & oversee the work.If we expect them to oversee the work than we dont need corrupt politicians, third grade contractors & unprofessional Corporators,Panchayat officials in the state simply to maintain our roads in good condition.Forget about the condition of national highways what about the condition of our Bangalore/Mangalore city & internal roads. If we need better roads the protest is the only solution.Shame on politicians who are responsible to give us good roads after 63 years of obtaining independence.

Take legal action against the authorities concerned for delaying the construction of roads which is half done. There's nobody to question the authority. All this amateurish work exists only in India. That is why this country will always be a third world country for another century.

If what as a professional I see is the underlay for permanent work on Highway 13 then am sorry to say that this is another case of "loot" by the contractors. I suggest all the activists get from the Internet the correct Central PWD regulations on Highway roadwork and see how everyone is being ripped off- if there is to be mud then it should be at least 30 inches below the final coating and hard packed not loose with debris flying around as in the article. I wish everyone luck but due to handicaps I cannot personally help much as I would have liked to.
Also one more thing, try to match actual measurements with the work order issued to the contractors as they only do 60-70 pct of work and charge for 100 pct.

Very correctly said Mr Praveen, Mangalore/Boston to all concerned!
Yes, it is the responsibility of Central Government to maintain NH at its best and at the same time UPA's responsibity is also to disturb/harm the people where BJP governs...So people cannot expect present Central Government will take early initiative in this respect!!!
Its also sure this present bad politics to its so called democracy is hurdle to our developmental system everywhere!!!!
People should leave the habit of communal hatradness and come together for good reasons for the betterment of all!!!!!

NH-18, Brahmarakotlu stretch-why state leaders & public not co-operating with NH Authorities to clear the tangle? Why in-ordinate delay in clearing a small tangle with tact, defies all our great leaders ability.WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY.

It`s high time, irrespective, whoever is responsible, that they complete this work soonest possible, as the work has been going on for years now, and the common public and the motorists have been suffering all along. I have personally experienced difficulties travelling in this section several times as the rikshawalas flatly refused to take passengers mainly because of the bad road, and even if they agreed reluctantly, charged almost double the rates. Good on you people for taking out the morcha and keep up the pressure.

BJP govt. has money in crores to donate to temples in Karnataka as well as Kerala but they are running short of resources for urgent and critical road repairs. Instead of taking proactive measures they are blaming NATIONAL HIGHWAY AUTHORITY of INDIA or CPWD depts. just to divert peoples' attention from the issue. Top to bottom its BJP administration and it is their duty either to repair the roads or to co-ordinate with the appropriate authority.
