Bangalore, Feb 11: In a path-breaking initiative aimed at assisting Kannada research scholars residing abroad, Karnataka’s Kannada Development Authority (KDA) has mooted a proposal on funding to set up Kannada Chairs in four universities in Germany and Austria.

KDA Chairman “Mukhyamantri” Chandru said three of the four universities are in Germany: Munich University, Heidelberg University, University of Wurzburg, and the fourth university is Vienna University, Austria.

Mukhyamantri Chandru said the Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has been requested to allocate Rs 2 crore each for setting up a Kannada Chair in each of the four universities in the State Budget for 2011-12.

The proposal, if accepted by the Chief Minister and funding is made in the state’s budget for the year 2011-12, will be a novel initiative for a state government in India offering financial assistance in its annual budget for foreign universities, albeit for setting up of Kannada chairs.

The BJP MLC, who earned the name of Mukhyamantri for his memorable role of a chief minister in a Kannada movie, explained that the four universities had already established Indology Departments to teach Indian languages.

For the benefit of research scholars, Mukyamantri Chandru said the Universities had sought one-time grant to set up chairs and purchase Kannada books.

Mukhyamantri Chandru, who led a delegation to these universities, said the University of Wurzburg has nearly 2500 Kannada books and 250 video cassettes of various Kannada films.

The foreign universities had also inked pacts with some of the State universities for promoting Kannada and exchange of faculty, he said.

Meanwhile, the KDA chief said the Government has decided to hold a programme at the Freedom Park here on Sunday to grant fellowships of Rs 20,000 each for 80 post-graduate Kannada students studying in seven universities located outside the State.

The annual fellowship amount of Rs 16.38 lakh would be given to 38 girls and 42 boys studying MA programme in Kannada in Kannada Post-Graduation and Research Centre, Kasaragod; Madras University, Chennai; Usmania University, Hyderabad; Bombay University, Mumbai; Madurai Kamaraja University, Madurai; Dravida University, Kuppam; and Sollapur University, Akkalakote.

He said ‘Kannada Nudi Teru-Jagriti Jatha would be launched in Nandagada in Belgaum district on February 22 to create awareness about the language in the border areas of the State on the eve of World Kannada conference in Belgaum next month.

The ‘Jatha’ would pass through Kittur, Bailahongala, Savadatti, Ramadurga, Gokak, Raibagh, Athani, Chikkodi and Hukkeri constituencies of Belgaum district, he said.

Mr.A. D'Souza with all due respect to your perspective, in my humble opinion saying of having no intention of hurting is similar to Turkish revenge where one is allowed to stab or shoot someone below waist just to take revenge & it was legal since the former had no intetion of killing the latter.I mensinoed my profession just because a) away from home abroad it is always pleasing to find people from where we hail & to speak with them in the native language. The pleasure is always greater than that of in back home.b)People of only 70 countries know English, elsewhere it is useless even in the air ports.

The words - useless= of no worth, less use= less in practice, use less= conserve. The Indian scripts are the most suitable for use in computers as experts say since they use speach symbols & all of the symbols are classified & tabelled scientifically. British promoted English worldwide & it is familiar now which once was alien to others. Let's promote our's. The cause is noble to appreciate. If the same German & Austrian universities tried to promote their languages in Karnataka all of us would have appreciated in one accord. Wouldn't we? Then why different measures for Kannada? I think I've clarified my perspective to you, so did you to me. Let's don't have anymore precipitation on this issue.

    S.S.D’Souza:
I think I had made it very clear that my intention was not to hurt anyone. I too am a kannadiga and this is my personal opinion. You may please take it or leave it, which is entirely up to you. I did not ask you to stop using this language. It is a good to read carefully before responding. I myself speak it even now when I am with my kannadiga friends, although I am not a sailor by profession. Finally, the four letters I have use in the word ‘use-less’ simply means it is less useful, nothing more nothing less. My point was about the huge sum of money that is being used or wasted on promoting this language. If a thing is good and useful, you do not need to promote it. It grows automatically, definetly not at the cost of so many crores of rupees which can be put for a better use.

Mr.A.D'Souza your in fact hurting all of the Kannadigas by saying that Kannada is useless. Perhaps it is for you but in fact it is one of the sweetest languages on Earth rich with great litreature since ancient times to present. I'm a sailor by profession & visit different countries, whenever I meet Kannadigas I speak with them in Kannada & that gives me a great pleasure. However I too noticed that most of them are reluctant to speak in Kannada & try to impress with their knowledge of English instead. It is sad to say among Indians I feel we Kannadigas are the only ones who don't respect Kannada & have a great affinity for English. Knowing English is really excellent because it increases the opportunities of earning a living but why we should seek an alien language for communication in between us. Knowing a few words in the English vocabulary & using them frantically dosen't make one intelligent, intelligence comes from within instead. Language is just a means of communication. However great initiative has been taken to promote our very own language across the globe, which I appreciate very much. I'm indeed proud to be a Kannadiga.

My intention is not to hurt anyone. I am saying it because I truly believe that it is only a waste of money, resources and effort. Nothing more nothing less. I had done all my schooling in kannada language so I think I have the right to say what I want to say in the interest of others. Other than communicating with a few of my old friends I have never used this language for any other purpose. I feel sad that people are ready to spend in crores to promote this useless language.
