Bantwal: Stranger fleeces doctor of Rs 1.65 lac on pretext of updating Jio number

Bantwal, May 3: A stranger called a doctor and asked him to download an app from Google Play ostensibly, in order to update the latter's Jio mobile number. Once the doctor did so, the fraudster withdrew Rs 1.65 lac from the doctor's account in a different transaction.

According to a complaint filed in the CEN station of the district by Dr B Ashwin Baliga of Kids Care centre near B C Road in the taluk, a stranger called him at around 5.30 PM on April 29 from mobile number 9348699702 and said that he needs to update the Jio mobile number of the doctor. He asked Dr Baliga to download the 'Quick Easy' app from Google Playstore. Once it was done, the stranger asked Dr Baliga to recharge Rs 10 on My Jio App. The doctor did the same by putting HDFC debit card details and recharged for Rs 10.

Within no time, without the knowledge of the doctor, the online fraudster withdrew Rs 10, 000 three times and Rs 45, 000 three times. In total, Rs 1,65,000 was transferred to the account of the fraudster.

CEN police are investigating further.

    to all..there are many many fraudsters now calling people to take money .some look like genuine but we have to be very careful.particularly some north Indians men, women calling as genuine deals even to help.for business ,, arranging loan.. since 1996 I am carefull..but no one could cheat me. We have to be careful...requesting people apply brain for all calls. Never send money to any faraway person. If yu know it's okay. Never trust online calls.. we have many fakus with smile and tricks ..be cautious. GURUSRI VISHWANAND.divine astrologer.

    Strange.. a qualified Doctor could be duped so easily then what about and uneducated Person.. Recently I got a call from a Person speaking in Hindi stating that my ATM card has been blocked and He would assist Me in re-activating it.. As I do not have an ATM account in that respective bank I told Him that I shall meet the bank staff in Person and discuss about it.. So He said that " are you coming to the Bank In Person to buy liquor".. Sniffed that this is a hoax call and abused Him in such vulgar language in Hindi, He might not ever heard of..

    As far as possible use cash, cheque/ demand draft for payments. Keep a separate bank account with a small balance, linked to a debit( not credit) card, set limits for the card and internet banking to limit your liability. Visit bank or mobile company office physically, better to spend Rs 10-20 for the petrol/ auto /bus fare and some precious time, better to be safe than sorry. Do not scan QR codes and use other forms of digital banking. Do not make things" Quick and Easy " for the fraudster. Before downloading any app read about it. Before answering a call or email from unknown people presume he is a fraudster unless proved otherwise. There is no emergency except medical, don't being a hurry to take any decision.

    His doctor license/certificate should be suspended with immediate effect. How can u download an app on instructions from a unknown person. Morover what is the logic behind number update. Never heard of it, ridiculous. This is the demerit of too much education.

    Today it is the educated and qualified people who get conned by the fraudsters. It is due to the "I know everything" attitude of the educated that lands them in this pitfall. Every now and then the telecon compnies are warning the subscribers about these frauds. College professors, doctor and engineers are as gullible as any ignoramus in this matter. All that the police can do is to chase that SIM number. But these conmen have these SIM cards only for a single use and then they destroy them.
