Udupi, May 17: Manipal police arrested four people, who hired a taxi and took it to Karwar and robbed the driver.
The arrested accused are identified as Charan (35), from Ullal in Mangaluru, Mohammed Azaruddin (39), a resident of Shirva, Sharath Poojary (36) from Bantwal and Jayaprasad (43), a resident of Mangaluru.
Sridhara Bhakta (61), resident of Shantinagara 80 Badagubettu had parked his taxi near Tiger Circle of Manipal on the evening of April 27. Four men, aged between 35 to 45 years and speaking in Tulu hired the car to go to Karwar.
Around 8.40 pm, when the taxi reached Ankola railway station, accused asked Bhakta to stop the car. A person who was sitting in the backseat held the neck of driver Bhakta and the other three pulled him from the driver’s seat and made him sit on the back seat.
Later, the gang showed knife and robbed Rs 3,000 cash in the wallet of Bhakta and his watch. One of the gang members drove the car back to Kundapur and reached Anegudde at 11.30 pm and stopped the car near an ATM. When taxi driver Bhakta went inside the ATM and came out, the accused escaped from the spot. Bhakta registered a complaint in this regard at Manipal police station.
Manipal police quickly sprang into action and arrested the accused. The accused are produced in court.
The operation was guided by SP Vishnuvardhan, additional SP Siddalingappa, DySP Sudhakar Nayak. Manipal police inspector Manjunath, SI Rajashekhar Vandali, personnel Shailesh, Nagesh Naik, Prasanna, Imran and Prasad were in the team that undertook the operation.
