Mangalore: Fr Fred V Pereira, Former Vicar General Passes Away

Mangalore: Fr Fred V Pereira, Former Vicar General Passes Away
By Fr Francis Rodrigues, Raknno

Mangalore, Feb 27:  Msgr. Fredrick V. Pereira the former Vicar General of the Diocese of Mangalore went to the heavenly abode at 11.30 am  Sunday 27th of Feb. 2011.

He was born on Spet 12, 1936 in Valencia as son of  Aloysius Pereira.  He lived 74 years  of life and 49 years of Priestly life as he was ordained a priest on Dec 4, 1961.

After his ordination he served as assistant Parish Priest at Milagres Church Mangalore.  After being the Secretary of Bishop of Mangalore for some years he had been to Rome to have Doctoral studies in moral theology from Urbanian  University of Rome.  After his studies he was back in Bishop’s House  as chancellor and secretary to the Bishop of Mangalore.

Later he served as the Parish Priest of Cathedral for 8 years and Parish Priest of Madanthyar for 9 years.    After being Parish Priest of Urwa for 4 years he was the second Diocesan Rector of St. Joseph’s Inter Diocesan Seminary Jeppu for 5 years.  From 2003-08 he served as the successful Vicar General of the Diocese of Mangalore.  After a year long service as the Director of St. Antony’s Charitable Institutions Jeppu he served as the campus minister for a year in St. Joseph’s Engineering College, Vamanjoor. Since 2010 he was on medical leave residing at St. Antony’s Senior Priests’  Home, Jeppu.

As Parish Priest of Madanthyar & Correspondent of the Madanthyar Educational Institutions he was known for  completing the Sacred Heart College project and houses for the poor in Madanthyar.  In 1988 Fr Fred V, Pereira the parish priest of Madanthyar and Fr Robert Crasta the College Principal  started a programme called ‘earn while you learn’ for the needy students. According to this program the students would work for a part of the day to earn to provide for their studies. The parish gave those students the work and supported financially. The saga of the college is not just about success. It has faced many tribulations, of which the financial burden has been enormous.

The 1989 was declared as the year of austerity in Madanthyar in order to pay the heavy debts incurred to build the college. During that year all celebrations were cancelled and each home in the parish and each class room kept a box in order to gather savings. It is an important event in the annals of the college. Besides, several cultural programmes were conducted to collect money.

There was contemplation to close the college due to lack of student strength and financial constraint. The relentless efforts of the correspondent Fr Fred and the principal rejuvenated the college to  greater heights. The college celebrated its decennial in 1992. If Fr Liguory D’Souza is called the architect of modern Madanthyar Fr Fred V. Pereira is named as the ‘Builder of Modern Madanthyar’. To mark the contribution of Fr Fred, the hall that was built by Fr Robert Crasta, is named Fr Fred V Pereira auditorium.
Accoring to Most Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza the Bishop of Mangalore Fr. Fred is a committed & dedicated Priest of the Diocese of Mangalore.

According to Msgr. Denis Prabhu the Vicar General he is a self less Priest always thought of others.  He was like a two side burning candle that shed light into every side.

According to Fr. Peter S. Noronha the classmate of Fr. Fred, he is a person who always thought of others.
The duty was first for him then everything else. Being a good singer in earlier times he entertained children through his songs wherever he had been.

According to Fr. John Fernandes another classmate of Fr. Fred, he is hard working and simple. Even though he was not so intellectual during his seminary studies he was very human and adjusting.  He did nothing for himself but everything for the church and others.

According to Fr. Joseph Martis the present Rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary, Fr. Fred was a dedicated Rector of this Institution and his assignment.  He humbled himself and instilled a lot of interest and enthusiasm in the Seminary.  De-centralization in the administration  of the seminary was his key-note of management.  He tried his maximum towards the financial development of the seminary.

Msgr Fred was rushed to Fr. Mullers hospital at 11.15 am today from St. Antonys’ because of a sudden heart failure.  After being anointed by Msgr Denis Prabhu, Msgr Fred breathed his last at 11.30 am at Fr. Mullers hospital. Bishop and Vicar General have condoled his death.

The mortal remains will be placed at St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia at 3:00 pm on Wednesday March 2, 2011 followed by Mass at 4:00 pm.

Death always brings sadness, loneliness and pain of parting. While it is difficult to come to terms that Fr. Fred is no more with us physically, we have to over come our grief to accept God's will. We will always cherish the memories we have.

We have truly lost a great human being in the passing away of Dear Fr. Fred. A friend, philosopher and guide, he touched everyone with his simplicity and humility. My mind goes back in time when he returned from Rome and on his regular visits to my Mum would hand over rosaries and blessed relics....Who can forget him singing Ave Maria and Mother of Mine with his particular devotion to our Lady and his reminder that we 3 children carried the name of our Lady. Vivid memories of the homily he preached at my dear Mother's funeral and his attendance at all our family gatherings have left an imprint on my mind....We salute you and pray God grant you eternal rest in the Lord's kingdom. Mangalore will truly miss you and your good work!

FR. Fred was great leader, He helped many poor for the education there are many today reached comfortable position because of his simplicity, He use to beg some one for our need. For me he was Godfather, Use to meet him on my every visit to Mangalore, but my last visit to him in Fr.Mullers hospital was remarkable one he recognised me but was not ready to talk with anyone, This selfish world cornered him like common man.

I can't forget tears of his sister was in the hospital taking care of him. Anyway this day everyone has to face but Fr, Fred will remain in many hearts like me. I know there was a big shock for him God will answer and reward for everything. My only prayer let his soul rest in peace and may Lord take him into his glory.

This is to put on record one more achievement of Fr. Fred and gift to our city and Diocese. Mangalore Autorikshaw & Car operators Co.op. Society, under the banner MACCO, which was established with his leadership and through this co.op. society thousands of Autorikshaw drivers are owners of Autorikshaws and Taxi's. His motivation has led the directors and staff of the fuel station at Balmatta,to achieve success and today Macco petrol outlet is a prime establishment of the city. Through this cooperative movement he helped the lower income group of Auto and Taxi drivers not only to become owners but gave facelift to become honest and decent citizens, bringing them under one association i.e. St. Christopher's Association where in the members were trained and educated through talks, seminars and training programmes, in their particular working field. Through this Association, he extended helping hand to the needy family members of the Drivers in the form of free distribution of books, interest free loan at times of difficulty or natural calamity. Mortuary Fund through which funeral expenses the membrs are paid by the association. Christopher's Hostel at Rosario, gives shelter to the low salaried youngsters coming from neighbouring villages of Mangalore.

Fr. Fred has left a mark wherever he has served and he has been the bread winner for all the staff and workers at the Schools, Colleges, establishments. He is a HERO, though appeared simple and humble.

    May his soul R.I.P.

I vividly remember participating in Fr. Fred's Ordination at the Jeppoo Seminary as a young altar server. He served his vocation well being a dedicated, caring and helpful priest. He has shown us by example the meaning of "community spirit" and made us all proud. He was fond of my parents. Our family will always remember his helping hand to my mother at the time of her struggle, with her illness. He will be sadly missed but always fondly remembered. May his sister Sophie and rest of the siblings find comfort in knowing that he served his community and vocation very well. It is time to be sad but also time to cherish his contribution to our diocese and community.

A real Pastor of Christ, humble at the same time great visionary. A great role model to his people. I was blessed with the opportunity to have him as my Parish Priest at Madanthyar. Later, when he was in Mangalore town, each time I met him he would enquiry about each of my family member by name. May God send many such Priests in his Vineyard. May He grant Fr. Freddy the Crown that he deserves and Eternal Joy of seeing his Creator face to face. Fr. Freddy you will remain in our hearts forever. Till we meet again....adieu

A priest extra ordinaire, noble and dedicated. Modern in thinking but old school of thoughts. Never ever shunned his priestly robe with loyalty and full dedication to any cause undertaken. I knew him as a child when he was first appointed as the Assistant parish priest of Valencia and he was there in our midst for our every family occasions. His dedication towards educating the poor students and reaching out was the motto of his life. His projects were endless and never to be forgotten. Whichever parish he was appointed, he would leave his footsteps behind by doing something special and worthy for the parishioners. His greatest achievement was St. Joseph Engg College which was dear to him until the end.
Dear Fr. Fred - you will never be forgotten in our hearts. You were an EXEMPLARY PRIEST and I am sure you could be taken as role model by young priests.

Your singing - 'Ave Maria' and 'Mother of mine' is still ringing in our ears….
May Mother Mary welcome you as you enter the heavenly abode and Jesus love you as you have loved all the poor and needy wherever your path had tread on your priestly mission.
Our heartfelt condolences to the entire family members of Msgr. Freddy Pereira.

Father you were very simple, humble and a good priest , always with a smile and his good words impressed many youngsters and because of him more than 100 vocations came from Madanthyar, and they become priest or Nun. Truly loved and remembered till today by all the Parishioners of Madanthyar. He has been hailed as “Builder of Modern Madanthyar”. Thank you Father for everything you have given to the Parish of Madanthayr and Diocese. May your soul rest in peace.

I have personally known Monsignor Fred Pereira for at least three decades and I have no hesitation in saying that he was one of the most dedicated priests the Diocese of Mangalore could have. He built Madanthyar from a little known village into a township. He was the one who went round all over including The U.S.A. to seek support for The Diocese. He has come to my home several times discussing the various projects but has never asked for funds and that was his way to sell ideas but his well wishers willingly supported him financially.

He is the one who told me about the endowments for educating the seminarians at St. Joseph's and collected lacs for the purpose. The home for the senior Priests at St. Antony's stands is a mute witness of his good will. He worked relentlessly to build up the Bishop's Poor Patients" fund. His support to St. Joseph's Engineering College has gone down in history. As The Vicar General any one and every one had free access to his room with any legitimate demand.

As The Director of St. Antony's he made sure that all the residents were happy and comfortable. It is also said that he used to have his meals with the senior priests to give them a sense of belonging.

Towards the end dear Father Fred appeared to be only a shadow of himself. I saw him two days before his demise and it was a sad meeting. The Diocese of Mangalore has lost a great priest in Father Fred. He is a saint. We should not pray FOR HIM BUT to HIM.

Fr. Fred Pereira's death was a great loss to the diocese of Mangalore and the whole Church in India and the world over. He has been a great source of inspiration to the young priests and brothers and also to the faithful and to the local community in any capacity he has served in the vineyard of the Lord. A man of the poor and he downtrodden, down to earth and compassionate. A great committed pastor. I had known him since 1978 when he was the PP of Our Lady of Miracles church, Mangalore and we worked together for the tricentennial celebrations of the church. A very good person to relate to and work with. His service has been youmen and appreciated by the people of all walks of life and religions. His dedication had built the whole township of Madanthyar, with the Sacred Heart institutions there, the St. Joseph,s Seminary, as a man worked for the future priests by building the fund of the seminary, and to cap it all the jewel among the Engineering colleges of Karnataka, the St. Joseph's Engineering College Vamanjoor. Mangalore has lost a good priest, a good leader and also a good communicator. Mnsgr.Fr.Fred also served as a Spiritual Advisor for the International Institute for Public Policy and his presence will be missed. Mnsgr.Fred was nominated to be the recipient as an "Outstanding Communicator" Award for the year 2010 but due to his ill-health he was unable to attend our gathering last October. We were also proud that he was the first priest from the Valencia parish to be ordained.

Fr. Fred was a good friend and a good Mentor. He was always proud of his achievements at Madyanthar Parish. He was also proud of his attachment towards St.Joesph Engineering College where his teamwork with Fr.Valerian was closely observed and admired.

It is now our desire to award late Mnsgr.Fr.Fred Pereira a posthumous Award as an "Outstanding Leader" for the year 2011 on behalf of IIPP. Further announcements will follow, meanwhile we pray that Fr.Fred may rest in peace.

Fr.Fred like Fr.Stany Coelho, Fr.John Van Derlin and Fr.Denzil Lobo is One of the greatest Priest I've respected and adored in all my life., he taught me to play the organ in the church when I was just 10 yrs old boy, to sing to read Music and to conduct choir.....and most important to live a life as per Christ's teachings.....an outspoken and sincere priest.....yes I am sad he is no more...but am confident that he will be rewarded by the Good Lord with one of the best places in heaven to rest peaceefully and perhaps to train the heavenly choirs to sing GLORIA IN EXCHELSIS DEO....for ever.

During the year 1983,when the Bejai Parish was in turmoil, he was sent to lead the church as the Parish Priest and built unity among the church members. Although not much known today , he was the new spirit to the Bejai church during the turbulent period.Few priest like him have done great achievement in the Mangalore diocese. I pray god may his soul rest in peace.

O God, Thou didst raise Thy servant, Rev. Fr. Fred V. Pereira, to the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ, according to the Order of Melchisedech, giving him the sublime power to offer the Eternal Sacrifice, to bring the Body and Blood of Thy Son Jesus Christ down upon the altar, and to absolve the sins of men in Thine own Holy Name. We beseech Thee to reward his faithfulness and to forget his faults, admitting him speedily into Thy Holy Presence, there to enjoy forever the recompense of his labors. This we ask through Jesus Christ Thy Son, our Lord. Amen.
