Historical Thousand Pillar Basadi Damaged Due to Blasting Activities

Moodbidri, Mar 1: Two slabs on the roof of the historical Thousand Pillar Basadi were damaged a few days ago, much to the astonishment of archaeology enthusiasts. Swami Charukirti Bhattaraka of Jain Mutt here has said that arrangements are underway to restore the slabs.

Addressing media persons, Swami Bhattaraka said that a large fissure had formed on the entrance of the Basadi known as ‘Tribhuvana Chudamani’.

He said that he suspected this was due to explosives used in blasting the boulders that lie less than 200 meters away and the heavy vehicular traffic which passes on National Highway 13 that lies a few meters away from the Basadi,.

Swami Charukirti Bhattaraka stressed on the union government’s directive to lay highways at a distance of at least 500 meters away from national monuments of archaeological significance by laying bypass roads, thereby safeguarding historical worship centers.

He also laid emphasis that the Thousand Pillars Basadi does not have any other source of income and they find it difficult to pay huge electricity bills every month. The state administration had electrified the Basadi at a cost of Rs 3.5 lac but not granted any other fund for its upkeep.

He also said that visitors to the Basadi enjoy free access and it would continue even in the future although media persons suggested imposing entry fees.

    The prophets in the native place is not respected by natives.

    Similarly, the local tatents are treated as cheap by the locals.

    I and like me several people were not knowing the importance of this monument previously because it is very close to our area.

    One of my friends is a Jain who is from Gujarat. He said that it is one of their most holy places and he will definitely one day visit there because it is a great place for Jains.

    That point onwards, I started thinking deeply about this monument.

    Whenever I pass through this place, I used to think why the govt can not maintain it properly. It is a tourist spot which has the potential of attracting millions of people around the world.

    Instead of waiting for the govt to do something, why can't we the public float a forum and work out the modalities for its upkeep irrespective of caste creed and religion? What is important is a strong machanism to look after this great piece of historic monument(income can be generated lateron)!

    What I am saying is based the the information obtaind under RTI Act.

    The information given by Mr. Ismail Perinje is not based of actual figures but only collected by reading newspapers here and there.

    The offerings made at various muzarai temples goes to Govt. account and are given to masjids and madrassas from this account.

    In the past 75 per cent of the donations were going to these minority institutions.

    Now, if the government is taking corrective measures, I welcome the same.

    Menace of using explosives for blasting the boulders in close vicinity of historical & residential sites is very dangerous & needs to be addressed. What is happening at moodabidiri is not differant what is happening in my home town Bailur. Due to blastig activity in less than 200 mts (On Umikal Kunja)is damaging many houses in the neighbourhood and many pleas to officals has turned to be foul.

    You are right Mr C K DAYANANDA, MANGALURU our present BJP govt have not done any injustice to majority or minority community people and definately have given more benefits than the previous state govts. Some of the commentators here cannot digest this so blindly commenting.

    @anamika, Mangalore the defect came to the notice only on last saturday. Yeddy will definately take steps for repairing it. By the way why are you worried about this. Last time when yeddy donated some amount to the church, here some of the commentators commented that it's a big drama by Yeddy. So you will comment the same in this matter also.

    C K Dayanada Mangalore,Don't teach me how to live peaceully first of all.FYI Yeddy sanctions crores of rupees in every visit of his inside and outside Karanataka's temples and trusts.I am not against sanctions of finacial resources to desreving temples. He niether visited nor sanctioned any 'CRORES OF RUPEES' to Masijids or Churches in these days.Yes two years before 50 lakhs rupees sanctioned to ULLALA DURGHA on the eve of UROOS!!!Do you have any example of Yeddy visited Jain Basadies?except for Maha Masatakabbhisheka's of VENOOR and SHREWANABELAGULA.

    Mr Dhanajaya Kumar ex minister,special rep of Karanataka,an Jain Community member,who defended Yeddy sucessfully in the media and one of the closest aide of Yeddy,should he brought this issue to the attention of CM,there would be some help from the state govt as Shree Charukeerthi Bhataraka Swami even informed that they were find it difficult to pay electricity bills!Such an historical monuement and the only kind in the world does not need any attention from CM??Certainly it is not divide and rule policy as I am not an MLA or oppn party leader or an politician or any communal org leader...... This historical monuements stands @ our native place so that I called attention motion of concerned.Those who have jaundice I can't help anyway.

    1000 pillar temple is beautiful and very loving architect building. V friends use to study there sitting on the entrance hall no need airconditin or fan it is just calm and cool place. On our every vacation v visit there to see the beauty of the architect. About the maintenance really it is too bad, Govt has to do something and allocate some funds to maintain the temple in good condition and people those who visit must give some token amount as donation for the welfare of the building. After all goodwill people must give some atention for the development of the 1000 Piller temple to shine many more years. It is very Historical Basadi need to maintain well.

    You people always adopt the divide and rule policy. Now, you want to create rift between Hindus and Jains. You always find fault to spew venom against Hindus. First learn to live peacefully in this great country.

    Instead of spending 50Crores for "Thai Anna poorneshwari" temple , Yediyoorappa could have spent that sum on protecting such historical monuments. But what to say.. He should have sense to evaluate such things..

    I have fond momory of using the place to study (only disturbance was birds overhead).
    Due to green grass (no alternative grounds), athletes, who were long distance runners, used it as a training place.
    Historical Tulu movie 'Koti Channaya' was also shot in the precints of this historical monument.
    If government is reluctant to support, better fix an entry fee (see then how this place will come under CISF cover as in many places in Goa).
    As for state government support, I think local MLA does not belong to ruling party. Hence let us play politics till we come above this petty approach.

    Why not charge entry fee for hundreds of people arrive every day.Shifting NH to 500 meters away is a impossible task in moodbidri.There will be hundreds of court cases by Jains itself if they shift the road.There are some old temple buildings nearby on the deep curve towards alangar which is always risky turn for drivers.

    moodbidri is popularly known because of 1000 pillar temple...this will b the proud 4 all moodbidri people...govt only spending money 4 builting new hindu temples....and not saving the historical places like dis...govt have to take care about this..

    When government is sanctioning crores of rupees for temples & still such a historical monument is damaged. It is totally State Governments responsible to protect & preserve the monument despite looking in any other angle. It is an art & shows how the Karnataka State was ruled during that time. Our future generation must able to see this & Government must take all precautions & necessary action.
    Thanks to Daijiworld for bring this issue & my request with Daijiworld to forward the article to our CM & Tourism Ministers too.
    The 1000 Pillar Basadi, as also the other Basadis in Moodbidri, were not constructed by any king or ruler. Charukirti Battaraka wanted to construct a Jain temple in Moodbidri, with the help of local people. He requested the then ruler of Vijayanagara Empire to grant him a piece of land for the construction of the temple. The Vijayanagara ruler, being a person of generous virtue, granted him the piece of land, on which the Basadi stands, for its construction. In 1430 A.D, under the guidance of Charukirti Battaraka, the merchant organizations of Moodbidri, the locally well placed people and the Chautas contributed to the construction of the 1000 Pillar Basadi.
    Starting from the entrance, the entire temple can be divided into 7 distinct parts, which are as follows:
    1.Mnasthambha
    2.Bhairadevi Mantapa
    3.Gaddige Mantapa (Also known as Chitradevi Mantapa)
    4.Namaskara Mantapa
    5.Theerankara Mantapa
    6.Lakshmi Mantapa
    7.Garbha-Griham[sanctum-sanctorum]

    If this trend of blasting near the national archaelogical sites continues, we may be in for a great disaster. Repairing the damage is not the solution. The blasting has to be stopped immeidately. When we had gone to see this place for the first time, when we were in school, we enjoyed counting the pillars. It is a pity that the management finds it difficult to pay the electricity bills every month. I am sure there are so many businessmen in this community who would be willing to take care of not only the electricity bills but other expenses as well. About 50 years ago, there was free access to this holy place. It is so even today. This shows that the management is not greedy to make money, though no visitor would hesitate to pay some entry fee. Dear caretakers, keep up the good work!

    'Jaina Kashi' Moodbidri known for it's monuemental wonder"THOUSAND PILLAR TEMPLE" is only known Jain Temple in the INDIA/ WORLD.Being it is considered as rare an piece of historical place Govt of Karanataka or Centre not did much to support to maitain the JAIN BASADI as report says.Yeddy Govt always fond of sanctioning crores of rupees in Budget to Mutt and Trusts deserving some attention on this Historical Basadi of Jains.

    I am wondering why Mr Dhanjaya Kumar,Karanataka's rep in Delhi,close aide of Yeddy not brought his(YEDDY) attention about the Jain Kashi!!!
