Mangalore, Mar 2: In an accident that occurred at Meltota in Kulshekhar in the city at around 7.45 am on Wednesday March 2, a city bus running on route No 4 between the city bus stand and Kushekhar Kannagudde went wayward before overturning in the roadside gorge. Seven persons were injured in the accident, one of them seriously.

The bus driver was present inside the bus at the time of the accident, but an unauthorized person, probably conductor, was driving the bus, said a number of eyewitnesses at the spot. The bus fell on its side, exposing all its wheels. The fact that there were no casualties appears to be miraculous.

The people also said that on this road, the city buses do not ply on time, as a result of which, a number of buses come together and fiercely compete with each other, endangering the lives of the passengers and road users, besides inconveniencing the commuters. They also alleged that sometimes, these buses never come, as they are engaged for marriage and other trips. Another lacuna they pointed out in the city bus services was that normally, last two trips of the city buses on this route at night are not at all run probably because of poor collections.

We wake up only when there is tragedy. Even when people experienced fierce competition they remained mute spectators. Couldnt they stop the bus when they were competing with other buses. In fact people should have come together to put an end to this dirty act playing with the lives of common people.
I remember while travelling from Udupi/Manipal buses people often complain about the continuous honking by the buses which gives a head ache to the commuters sitting inside the bus. When I asked one of the regular commuters why they dont take the driver to task for the noise pollution, he has no answer.

We always want some tragedy to happen to wake us up. Luckily there were no deaths. Let us hope people come together and put an end to such acts so that no one dares to do it in future.

People who are familiar with road know very well how lucky they are to survive .. if it would have toppled 2 more rounds , there was this huge steep down there .. and if it would have been say 10 more meters form there and toppled
Myself n my friends often used this road for rallies , we used to call it DT (dirt track) . best for racing , but surely not fit for public transport.

The conductor of the bus was learning driving on this public transport bus! And these type of drivers later issued licenses from the RTO who will be our city bus drivers. Just imagine that the life of our city bus commuters is in their hands! This accident is the irresponsibility of both the assigned driver & the owner of the bus. They should be put behind the bars first. Since I am the resident of the area, I have myself informed the owner of the rash driving of the said bus drivers many times & no action had been taken by him. I request the concerned authorities to cancel the route permit of the bus and the license of the driver and give permit to KSRTC immediately.

Even though the road is narrow in some places, these bus drivers have no concern to the pedesterians nor the fellow drivers. Sometimes they don't even stop if they brush other passing vehicle or push them (2 wheelers) to the ditch. The elected representatives are not bothered about the problem at all. The road is not asphalted and due to heavy blowing dust people are suffering with allergy and other health problems. (You can see in the photos the dust settled on the trees) Will the concerned authorities visit the area and take necessary action?

I travel on this road route daily three times up and down from my house and to the city. The bus route partly on the railway property and not asphalted. There was a proposal by the Railways to provide an alternative road on payment of certain sum to the Railways by Mangalore City Corporation and this proposal gathering dust for many years due to the apathy of the concerned authorities.
This is not the first time that this City bus Route No. 4 plying between State Bank Circle and Kannagudha via Saripalla met with an accident. The same bus had met accidents earlier occassions. This is mere carelessness on the part of the bus crew who are youngesters that the accident occurred.
They behave on the road as if they are owners of the road and the owner of the bus Mr. Ranjith seems to be least interested in taking corrective measures.
Wake up concerned authorities of RTO, Mangalore City Corporation, Police Dept., and the Corporator and provide motorable road to the people who pay tax to the Government or else you may have to face the wrath of the people. Do not test the patience of the people. If the concerned public authorities who are paid by the public tax payers money do not wake up and act, then you have no right to be in your job and it is better you all quit and make way for more efficient people in governance. Jai Karnataka, JAI HIND.

    Ryan,
The RTO will not wake up even if there is a casualty unless we all local people wake up and take a 'chati' in hand and wake them up!

Thanks Spoorthi Ullal for these touching photos. Drivers don't know that they entrusted with the lives of so many commuters as guardians and not owners. In every bus there should be a caption that reads "I am responsible for the safety of all passengers" so that when they pray to God they remind themselves of their obligation. These pictures are superb, too good to be true. Thanks Spoorthi Ullal.

I second your thoughts on this Ryan.... Unless something really nasty happens, no one will rise to the occassion. If only the bus had travelled 10 mts more....you would have see Times Now, NDTV, Suvarna & all the news channels...with Yeddyurappa coming there personally to inspect what had happen & then Mamta banerjee would hold a railway departmental enquiry

Mangloreans travelling in these buses will have to live with eternal fear of impending deadly accidents till such time as the intracity transportation is in the private hand. The operator's only aim is to make money at whatever cost. Just see the conditions of these buses, majority are skeletons not even fit for the scrap yard.

It would be a good idea to get insurance cover for passengers travelling so that the next of kin get some financial succor.

God protect us on our journeys from death and serious injuries!!

This same very Bus has met with an accident the 4th time now on this very route & because of divine Intervention that this Bus hasnt seen any casualties. Our RTO will not wake up till a casualty takes place. They look at it as just another routine affair
