Mangalore, Mar 6: In an unfortunate incident, a boat, St Antony out on fishing in the Arabian sea near Someshwar in the city outskirts caught fire at around 6.15 pm on Saturday March 5 resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 70 lac. The boat comprised new members who were saved and no injuries have been reported.

The boat owned by Sarita D'Souza, wife of  Joseph D'Souza, Bajal left for fishing on February 28 from Southg Wharf and suddenly caught fire on Saturday evening following a spark emerging at self-starter thus spreading to diesel pipe eventually encompassing the entire boat. However, to the crew members good fortune, the crew members of two boats, Yamuna Prasad and Shaun Peter, which were sailing close by came to the rescue of the beleagured boat members and were saved in the nick of time.

However, the efforts by the members of the two boats to extinguish the fire spraying water from their boats did not prove of great help as by then the damage had been done. Following this, the two boats towed the damaged boat towards South Wharf and reached the destination at around 3.00 am on Sunday Mar 6.

    This may be a natural disaster... But my father who worked at Fisheries department saw many of these scenes people do to get Insurance coverage and etc...

    Whenever I visit Fishing auction place I used to think whether these boats creating employment to many are adequately fire protected with chimical fire extinguishers-as they cook their food on board with fuel in their tanks proving once again they need to improve(in safety measures) further to prevent one of the mishaps that might happen in their sturggle for survival.

    I do not understand why the owners do not insure these fishing vessels? Is it that no insurance co. offers insurance or are the premiums too high?

    Thanks God no causality.I think there could be insurance cover for any loss of man and matrial.
