Mangalore: ‘Close Down UPCL for a Month’ – Pejavar Swamiji

Mangalore, Mar 11: Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejavar Mutt has suggested to the government to close down Udupi Power Corporation Ltd’s (UPCL) thermal power plant near Padubidri for about a month on trial basis. His suggestion came during his visit to Kadri in the city on Thursday March 10, for participating in a programme.

“Speaking to media persons in Bangalore, the Chief Minister has assured to set right all problems plaguing UPCL’s plant within a month,. Why not close down the plant till its problems are resolved fully?” he questioned.

The Swamiji said that he will convene another meeting of the UPCL officials, media persons, and affected people, within a week from now. He revealed his plans to allow the concerned the freedom to express what they feel, at the meeting, and that experts will be allowed to pose counter questions. He said that venue of this meeting will be kept a secret, to ensure that issues are discussed and solution is found, in a peaceful and orderly atmosphere. “My only goal is to ensure that the people do not suffer because of this project,” he stated.

The Swamiji said that during his visit to the affected areas, there was ash in the fields. “The company officials clarified that one of its pipes had developed a problem of leakage, and that they would additionally place three more pipes for ash transportation. For checking the complaint about the underground water turning saline, I tasted the water, but found that it was not saline. The affected people, when questioned, said that water turns salty occasionally,” the Swamiji said.

    Swamiji is right in demanding a closure of the power plant for a month till the environmental pollution issues are sorted out.

    The very fact that large scale fly ash getting strewn over and mixing with the surrounding air, soil and water sends dangerous warning signals for the environment both in the long and short run. Also this shows how the local population has been taken for granted while giving permission to this project. This is not an accident but a callous omission of safety measures and it needs to be tackled right at this stage before it takes monstrous proportions!

    Power or for that matter anything should not come at a cost of environmental degradation which will have a domino effect, least to say affect our many generations to come!!

    SWAMIJI HAS GOOD RAPPORT WITH STATE GOVT.HENCE I GUESS IT COULD BE MATRIALISED AND UCPL WOULD ADHERE SAFETY MEASURES STUPILATED TO THEM IN THE FUTURE.IT IS SUBJECT OF HUMAN HEALTH AND THOSE WHO COULD INFLUENCE CONCERNED (UPCL AND GOVT)MOST WELCOME.

    Swamiji of Pejavar Mutt has suggested to the government to close down Udupi Power Corporation Ltd’s (UPCL) thermal power plant near Padubidri  is ABSOULUTELY RIGHT. IN THIS CASE I SUPPORT 100% Swamiji of Pejavar Mutt as this UPCL thermal plant is very dangerous for enviornment and its waste leads to dreaded diseases to the coastal people as a whole.

    After all prevention is better than cure.

    Swamiji is right! We feel the pain when it happens to us only. Do we need the power at the cost of someone's health? Instead of depending on officers' recommendation, Government should take the advices from the experts. There are kannadiga experts available all over the globe who can render their service free of cost.

    We need consistant power. We need developments. Without power and energy we cant achieve any development or else we may end up as a backward state. We need power and we want to wipe out corruption. Clsoing down UPCL is not the solution but UPCL must be asked to abide the environmental and health issues. There should be a solution and this solution is possible only if there is a political will by the government and this swami cant do anything. So any one who wants to bring about changes, must speak to the government and not to the UPCL. Its sounds funny. Does this swami know whom he should be talking to??/ It looks like mere a publicity gimmick by this swami....

    Although I am for development and always support power corporation, in this issue i support Swamiji..yes the UPCL which has not followed the safety norms and which has failed to comply the pollution requirements shall be shut down until the initial problems are solved..!!!??? If such a action is not taken the problems will never be solved until the whole area around becomes graveyard..!!!???

    90% of UPCL’s problem is fly ash which they unable to dispose off in a professional manner. Fly ash can be used very effectively and efficiently and if UPCL and Private Entrepreneurs work together. Both these entities can generate a lot of money plus solve this million dollar problem.
    Uses of Fly Ash:
    1. Fly ash from coal-fired thermal power stations is an excellent potential raw material for the manufacture of construction material like blended cement, fly ash bricks, mosaic tiles and hollow blocks. It also has other, high volume applications and can be used for paving roads, building embankments, and mine fills.
    2. It can be a soil modifier and enhance its moisture retaining capacity and fertility. It improves the plant's water and nutrient uptake, helps in the development of roots and soil-binding, stores carbohydrates and oils for use when needed, protects the plants from soil-borne diseases, and detoxifies contaminated soils. Yields are also known to increase, as experiments on groundnut, sunflower, linseed and other oilseeds have shown.
    3. Fly ash can be used in Portland cement concrete to enhance the performance of the concrete. Portland cement is manufactured with calcium oxide (CaO), some of which is released in a free state during hydration
    4. Fly ash can be used for construction of road and embankment. Fly ash mixed with concrete increasing the life of concrete roads and structures by improving concrete durability.

    Swameeji,you better to restrict your area towards religious...
    there are people to work in this area...without the power nothing will move ...even you canot pass one night,it is a crores together project....dont give any loose statements....without the industry country will not develop....some years ago you were behind KIOCL to close down the minig project but didnot help the company to get some other fresh mining area... finally many indirect labours came to street...even today I believe company has no minig area.....

    Close down Udupi Power Corporation Ltd’s (UPCL) is not a solution. Already government spends lot of money for this project, and if you say now when project going to complete and close this project, you need to talk about this before when government start this project and now you say closing this project that is a solution. We have power supply problem and we need power and without any development how can we get power? And in this case people blame only government, yes I agree that there is lot of problem in (UPCL), in this case My suggestion is government and people should come together to find a easy way to stop problem’s , so stop fighting and come together.

    The government should appoint swamiji as the advicer for power projects in the state.He can work and save lot of money for the government as he do not need a office,gunmen and other chelas.
