Bengaluru, June 17: Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda will not contest for the President’s post as a candidate from the opposition parties, declared JD(S) leader and former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru on Friday, June 17.

Speaking to media persons in the party office after a meeting with JD(S) leaders on the ensuing elections to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), he said West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Bangerjee had invited him to participate in the meeting of the opposition parties, which has not decided on any candidate.

While expressing his gratitude to the West Bengal Chief Minister for his trust in the Deve Gowda family, Kumaraswamy said the opposition parties will be meeting again on June 20 when the name of the candidate was likely to be finalize.

The JD(S) leader said his father and the JD(S) supremo is keen on bringing the party to power on its own in Karnataka and all of them were working to realize the dream.

“Deve Gowda is not interested in contesting for the President’s post,” he said scotching any speculation of the former prime minister being chosen as the opposition candidate.

Kumaraswamy said the party would launch its Janata Mitra campaign in the city from July 1 for 17 days during which 15 LED vehicles will be touring the city.

“We will focus our attention on the problems of the people of Bengaluru and the contribution of Deve Gowda to the city as Chief Minister and Prime Minister and other various positions held by him,” Kumaraswamy said and urged the people to support JD(S).

He said a massive public meeting will be held at the National College grounds in Basavanagudi on July 17 to mark the culmination of the Janata Mitra campaign.

Kumaraswamy said he was ready for any debate on the Eagleton Resort scam and the allegations levelled against him during his tenure. “I am ready for a debate on any issues and am ready to retire from politics if any wrong doing was proved,” he declared.
