‘No Separate Kodagu State’, Stresses Union Government

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi (SP)

New Delhi, Mar 16: The prolonged campaign a section of Kodavas have been steadfastly carrying on since the last some decades, demanding for carving out of a separate Kodagu state suffered a setback, after the union government on Tuesday March 15, dismissed the demand.

“At this juncture, there is no proposal before the central government for setting up of a state reorganization commission. None of the governments have put forward any demand for separate state,” said Gurudas Kamat, minister of state for home, in a statement made in the Lok Sabha. This statement has also come as a dampener to the spirits of a large number of politicians and leaders from Andhra Pradesh, who have been vociferously demanding for carving out of a separate Telangana state.

The minister said that from time to time, the union government had received demands for bifurcating Karnataka to set up separate Kodagu state, carve out Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh, Vidarbha from Maharashtra, and for putting together parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh states to give birth to a separate state named Bundel Khand. “These demands have come from individuals and organizations, and not from the state governments,” he clarified. He also mentioned that there have been demands for setting up of Bhojpur state by pooling together certain districts of Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Saurashtra out of Gujarat, Koshalanchal in western Orissa, Gurkhaland  out of West Bengal, Mithilanchal by separating certain regions from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, as well as Poorvanchal, Harit Pradesh, Brij Pradesh and Avadh Pradesh out of Uttar Pradesh.

He said that the government takes into account everything into consideration before deciding upon the need for creating a new state.  He also added that the government will initiate such a step only if a need is felt for the same and only when if there is a consensus for such as step.

Lets not forget that there were not even a single Coorgi or Kodava King in the so called Kodava land coorg! Infact all the kings of coorg were Lingayaths (Hindus) and for some period Tipu Sultan conquered Kodagu. The coorgies were not royals but just a small tribe of people who were working as slaves when British ruled india. The british just USED the coorgies as the coorgi men were strong (to work in the argiculture land) and their women flock were charming..! It is when the British eventually retreated from India, their land were gifted to the Coorgi slaves. That is the real fact. So Kodagu belongs to all not just Coorgies!

I agree with Sumit Cariappa 99% .Coorgees are one of the rare people who have still maintained the Great Indian Culture ,Traditions .They Totally Non Corrupt .I lived in Coorg and found that .Even the Poorest of the Poor will not Steal there .Rather will starve But I disagree with the thought that outsiders are diluting the Culture .It is Better to have little Milk, water and sugar in the Coffee rather than Just Coffee .Outsiders are like that afterall we are all Indians .Coorgs Coffee need to be marketed for which little of outside Coorg people are required allow them please

Kodavas are not as corrupt as the rest of the other Indians. We are Magnanimous and Noble in our Kodava culture, and look beyond petty things to rob and fleece others. Tell me of one coorgi who has cheated anyone? Hardly anyone! Most Kodavas are honest people and work in service industries like the sardars of punjab. And if the Sardars can have a state, why not the Kodavas. Coorg is the Himachal Pradesh of the south, and we need to retain our distinct identity than the other unwanted ghattis, who have come and settled in coorg and diluting our culture!

How long can we think on the basis of language, geography and religion. Stop wasting time on these petty issues. We should be above all of them. I do like the kodava culture which is unique and needs to be preserved. But this cannot be the a reason to have a separate state.

Karnataka state still not provided basic facilities for those new enacted districts like Yaadgiri and even Udupi! The new taluks which were announced earlier also stands isolated due to non provisions of officials and infrastructure. Then how could TULU/COORGI.....new states come in to existence? It is not children's play to biforcate state with in state and I believe Karnataka should not be biforcated in future for whatever reason it encounters from group individuals or NGOs.
