Tulu Sahitya Academy Announces Annual Honorary, Book Awards

Mangalore, Mar 18: Litterateur Darbe Krishnanad Chowta (D K Chowta), folk artiste Korappolu and puppet artist Shantaram Kalladka will be conferred the Academy’s annual Honorary Awards 2010 – 11, announced Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy president Paltady Ramakrishna Achar at a press conference here on Friday March 18.

He is a native of Miyapadav, Manjeshwar in Kasargod district, Kerala and a post graduate in economics.  He was interested in Tulu folk art and literature since childhood.  He was a successful entrepreneur in Ghana and Nigeria where he managed his business for twenty-five years. 

He returned to Bangalore and continued his business enterprise.  It’s during his leisure times, he authored Tulu story book – Kariyavajjirena Katelu and Tulu plays – Pili Patti Gadas, Patt Pajjelu, Darmettimaye and Mittabailu Yamunakka among others..

He is a recipient of several awards including Karnataka Rajyotsav Award, Natak Academy Award, Tulu Academy Book Award and Sandesha Award.

Korappolu:

A native of Korambadka in Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district,   Korappolu has the wealth of knowledge on Tulu folk-songs, stories, old-adages, that she knows by-heart. She is the walking genius of folk-singing and dance.

Shantaram Kalladka:

He is a native of Kalladka, Bantwal.  He is an expert in puppet making and has set up its manufacturing facility at Kalladka, which are widely known as Kalladka puppets.  He is also an accomplished Tulu dramatist.

Tulu Academy also announced Tulu Book Award along with Honorary Awards.  Sacchidanand Hegde authored book – Tulunadavara Samaja – Tulu Nadavara Riti Rivajugalu; Vijay Shetty Salettoor authored book – Tanne Todada Sonne and Mayee, Tulu play by playwright Keshav Kudla bagged the Tulu Book Award, informed Paltady Ramakrishna Achar.

Tulu Academy registrar Chandrahas Rai and member Sarapady Ashok Shetty were present at the press meet.
