Kundapur: Fear of failure in PU supplementary exam pushes girl to kill self

Kundapur, July 1: A girl who had written her pre-university supplementary examinations, killed herself way before the results in Kullanje of Shankaranarayana village of the taluk.

The deceased is Manasa Kulal (17), daughter of Oddanagadde resident Babanna Kulal, who was a second year student in Shankaranarayana government PU college. She had failed in the PU examinations held in April and written the supplementary for the same in June. However, though the results are not announced yet, she was apprehensive that she might fail.  

While no one was at home, Manasa went to the cattle shed in front of her house in Oddanagadde and hanged herself. Shankaranarayana police have registered a case in this regard.

    There are many similar cases reported in the media which is a sad commentary on the mental state of young people. Any setback, especially in examinations, drives them to the deep end, and without any rationale they waste life away which could have been much better with persistence, resistance to suicidal thoughts, etc. It is mental illness that drives them to take away their precious life. Of course, if one is dead nothing matters to them. Surviving families mourn and soon everything is forgotten. Life is not sacred anymore. How sad!

    This is so Unfortunate! This needs to stop. there are just too many children killing themselves for something as menial as exam results. This has to be a bi product of pressure from peers, and mainly parents. The parents have to tell their kids it is ok to fail, just give it your best. Kids who fail in exams still do well in life. there is a Myth in society that if you fail in school you will fail in life. This has to stop.

    Very sad.She had I am sure no self confidence.Was thinking again she will fail.Never have that thoughts when you appear for exam.Think you know this and will certainly comeout with best notes.Parents too support in such cases.Not scolding or lower them when they fail.That is very important support from parents.All are not Genies.Every failed student will be more successful in other field.Think some genies are good in thinking ,writing or know all the chemistry but they fail to bind their own shoes !That doesnt function by them.Because our brain functions quite different.May her soul rest in peace.She would have been a successful in other section .Heartfelt sympathy to her parents.

    Failures are part of life. One should not be discouraged of failure. They should learn from it and keep pushing. She may be talented in one or other other thing . Parents should encourage their children saying that there are many opportunities. Failing in exams is not the end of the world.

    Children are under so much pressure from parents to do very well in their exams which contributes to their stress. If you look around the world many successful people are not who have done very well in their exams. Some school leavers are successful business people and are living comfortably. Having said that introduction of politics in education by these dirty politicians has spoiled everything for these students. May her soul rest in peace.

    Very sad that new generation is so weak mentally. This competitive education should be stopped, I believe only in India/ China and some other Asian countries have such thing. Competition in education is destructive of self-esteem of a student, it definitely interferes with learning, and slowly sabotages the relationships their peers, families and lastly with "themselves". RIP.

    Dear students, Do not think too much about results. If you pass, congrats, if you fail, try next time. Until you attempt the re-exam, please be calm & study nicely. People (might be your relatives, friends or family) may ask your scores. If you fail, for a few days they may talk bad about you. But it is only up to you how you ignore the negatives and see only positives. There are students who lose one year not because of failing but due to other reasons like family issues, poverty, changing course, or sickness. All these are going to get the same certificate as you. And nobody or no institute bothers the reason behind repeated exam. Just try hard to move forward in life. in between, you can even join some courses online until you join college again for additional experience in your field. There are people who scored rank in final exam but due to various reasons they don't even work or study further. Everyone has their own story. Even your classmates may not remember your performance in exam in future as they'll be busy in their life. So, it is up-to you how you live your life. In short, ignore negatives, and take inspiration from positive people. Chill guys.. life is too short. enjoy each moment with a positive smile.

    Marks based examination system puts a lot of stress on young minds... We know that most of us are not brilliant students... But that does not mean we can not succeed in life... There must be a rethink on shifting to grading system and open book examination... Memorizing each and everything is not at all a necessity in this modern world... Sad to learn another avoidable loss of life... RIP to the young soul...

    When failed in exams people became successful in life as job providers to those who passed the exams, taking extreme step wasn't the right solution. Too much emphasis on exams & results instead of trying to find out what their likes & passions would save more youngsters to become success stories. Our education system needs to include these real life examples in curriculum so that these kids will have 100 doors open while 1 closes on them. All are unique & uniform robots producing education system kills creativity.
