Mangalore: 'United Christians' Protest Near Kulshekar Church

Mangalore, Mar 20: The members of United Christian Association (UCA) organized a protest meet in front of  the church gate against the incident of assault and life-threat against UCA member and Lourdes ward gurkaar Norbert Lobo on Sunday March 20.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Vincent Dcunha, member of UCA explaining the incident of assault, alleged that Norbert Lobo was manhandled by church vice-president Praveen Patrao on March 13 Sunday mass at 6.00 am just below the altar where hymns are recited in front of all the devotees. The assault was clearly pre-planned. Lobo had moved to make announcement that the meeting of the Lourdes ward will be held that evening after the church authorities refused to announce the same, he alleged.

Continuing further, explaining the prelude to the incident, D'Cunha said that Lourdes ward member Evlin was sent on Saturday evening to inform passing a chit to parish priest as a custom to urge him to announce that the ward meeting will be held Sunday evening. However, parish priest showed a tepid response and did not announce the same on Saturday evening.

The protestors assembled in front of the gate around 8.00 am shouting slogans against the Praveen Patrao and burnt his effigy. Protestors disbursed around 9.30 am after the speech by UCA leaders.

Alleged Parties' Reaction

However, speaking to Daijiworld, the member of church administration rejected the allegations made by UCA, and said, Norbert Lobo instigated Praveen Patrao, which led to verbal exchange inside the church after the mass. As per the resolution passed by the parish council, no layman is allowed to make any announcement during or after the mass without the approval from parish priest or parish council.

But Norbert Lobo has forcefully made an announcementafter the mass which led to verbal exchange which led to altercation.

Further, Daijiworld has gathered that, local police station has issued a warning that no group, which has no affiliation to church is allowed to participate in church activities as well as interfere in it.

Some of our so called Christians always look for power in the church management. They manage to manipulate and do not hesitate to make decision for others. These people want to be great actors in the church.
Please try to understand one more simple philosophy of Mother Theresa.
“One need not do great things, rather one need to do little things with great faith”.

    (Continuation) Dear Joe,
Brother just open up your eyes and start seing things in both the angles. Then you would know what exactly happens.
If a priests who earns salary of Rs 3000 in a month is capable of driving around the places in Mangalore in Santro or better cars than that, did any of us think where does all that money come from when a layman even if he draws more than Rs 15000 salary in India is not capable of riding around with his bike? Its a simple logic guys..
I have heard many saying in Mangalore that it is better to have one priests in a family than 4 family members working in Gulf. So today becoming priests and running institutions has become a business. I have seen many Indian priests come abroad, portray India is a poor country and collect donations from West and that money is been either sent to their family members or their personal accounts. I have seen these things in my own eyes. I am sure many would have encountered similar stories. Dear folks I have mentioned these points just to open the eyes. Kindly request you, there is nothing wrong in protesting when things are wrong. Its not the end of the world but that would help to fix problems. If you think problems would be resolved by raising the issues to the higher authorities, nothing would happen as I feel there might be hardly you might find priests who are logical who could resolve such issues. The only way to fix problems is let the world know what is happening.

    Dear Joe,
Whatever you have mentioned about child molesting, is also happening in India even in Mangalore. In the US or Canada, parents raise the issues but in India they just keep quiet thinking about the society and child's future.
As I mentioned the priests are highly educated here as compared to Mangalore. If you have stayed in these countries you should have definately felt the difference between Mangalorean priests and the western priests. For example, when it comes about the donations to the church they donate first from their pocket money and ask the people to help unlike priests in India. Again asking for help in the parish happens once in a while, it doesn't happen like in Mangalore where every week the priest keeps talking about donations. There are no sunday masses in Mangalore happens without the talk of so called ' money'.
Would you tell me how many priests in Mangalore whom you find so helpful to the poor people? How many priests in Mangalore would you find who knows how to talk to people with respect?
I have seen in my school days that students were not allowed to enter the class because their poor parents could not afford to pay the school fee where the same school was built for poor. We have seen many nuns and priests sending the foreign aid money to their family members instead of sharing with poor who deserved it.
I am sure you too must know about all these things what are happening.

Firstly let me know whether you are united christians or dividing christians and secondly Mr. Norbert Lobo whats your problem if you are hurt by any person please call them personally and try to compromise with them instead of protesting in front of the church and i cant see any other gurkaars or members from the council supporting you. If you are right then why dont they support you ??From past one week we are getting some letters by post without the senders name or address mentioning against the priest. Are you a timid person? And y do u want to judge people. Lord Jesus will judge all humankind. Our priest is improved the place for us to pray and medidate. So y dont we go to the church to pray and medidate and stop judging people and the priests. If u have any problem with the priest go personally to him and talk to him. But please dont send these letters and spoil our youth and children. Stop these ridiculous thing because we know what our priest is doing in the church. We are not BLIND. LIVE IN PEACE, PRAYERS AND READ GOD'S WORD SO THAT GOD WILL GUIDE U IN YOUR LIFE AND CREATE A PRAYERFUL ATMOSPHERE IN CORDEL

Mr.Steve Pereira,Toronto,Canada I do agree many items you have mentioned in your Comments. But please stop praising, the Priests of US,UK,and Canada are better than Priest of Mangalore. I lived many many years in US and seen enough of it. If those priest were so highly educated and knew how to deal with people, how come they got involved in Homosexuality, Molesting youngsters inside Religious Institutions.
Religion of any faith is become a broker between God and Man. Trusting the broker is always questionable, whether he tells the truth or uses the avenue for His personal benefit.
For example: Priests(any faith) tell their congragation that their charity should be secretive between God and them. Left hand should not know the charity given by Right hand. Then you seen big Marble Slab or Banner in front of house of worship, telling millions of left hands that Right hand of Mr and Mrs. XYZ has donated so much for so called project. This is to manipulate others to compete with XYZ family. People are getting wiser and they will fight the hypocracy.

I have serious observations about Mangaloreans and this entire episode.
    1. They are heady and love to blow their own trumpet in spite of being wrong.
    2. They are smart and educated but seldom use their own head.
    3. They get fooled easily by touts who promise them to become millionaires overnight.
Mangalore has been in the news for all the wrong reasons but our Kulshekar friends have now embarrassed the entire Manalorean community.
They could have used these options first before resorting to all these tamashas.
    1. Lodge a formal protest with the Parish Priest.
    2. Protest / Fast inside the church premises to garner support from other church communities.
    3. Finally, if no response go the Bishop / Cardinal.
What is more important – our faith or ego?
Prima-facie all these problems reported look trivial.
Outsiders had a gala time taking a dig at us.
    Hoping good sense will prevail.

Finally, in short modesty dress to our children, or any one inside church. Not dress code in church. That’s different ( different ministries have different dress code - good) No one kick out anyone from the church if we dress …? but its not good. Our catholic church has very good system. Discipline . Wow!!! Say if any one (other faith people) enters the church. Still we can improve… like silence in the church. This will create praying atmosphere. If u read the above many comments they like discipline. Even protest outside church. Most of us are emotional ( natural- spontaneous) . example is this kulshekar church protest.

Dear Readers, after going through 168 comments, I place this on records.
1.I know the Parish Priest for the last 25 years. He is a man of Prayer,Commitment and Decipline. He will fight against injustice till the end and work for the SPRITUAL and FINANCIAL groth of the Parish.
2.He loves the poor and without anybodys knowledge he helps them.
3.Church is Holy and he doesnt tolarate any person entering the Church with exposing dress.
4.He will not tolarate the Church compound to be used for anti social activities.
5.Whatever it may be the consaquenceses he will safeguard the Church property.
Hence all those who made any comment on him better go and see his works, meet and know him and then pass a JUDGEMENT on him.
    THEN WHY THIS AGITATION ?
1.HE BUILT A BOUNDERY WALL TO THE CHURCH COMPOUND AND STOPED ALL KIND OF THOROUGHFARE.
2.HE PUT AN END TO THE SALE OF DRUGS INSIDE THE CHURCH COMPOUND.
3.HE SERVED EVICTION NOTICE TO CHURCH SHOP TENENTS WHO WERE NOT COOPERATIVE TO ENHANCE THE RENT FOR THE LAST SO MANY YEARS....
4.HE DOESNT DANCE TO ANYBODYS MUSIC...............
...SO HE IS DICTATOR,UNJUST,DONT HAVE THE MAN MANAGEMENT TALENTS,DOESNT COMPRAMISE....LET US CRUCIFY HIM IN THE HOLY CROSS CHURCH ITSELF.

Give us today our daily bread and forgive us from ur sins as "WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO SINNED AGAINST US" and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Thank God for what you are for now because the next minute does not belong to us, Think of the people in Japan who are going thru a horrendous time. Remember it's the providence and mercy of God you are not suffering. So do not show your power but let the world know the power of God in the way you live with love, peace, harmony, forgiveness among your family, in your church, with your neighbors and also with the non christians. At the very outset it appears to me that there is some kind of politics being played by some people within the UCA with regard to the protester’s real intention. Lourdes Ward member’s unity is good to see but don’t you think you should utilize this unity to fight for other good causes.I know the parish priest of Kulshekar very well since the last 25 years. I know he is a strict and very much disciplined with regard to preserving the holiness and sanctity of places of worship. He is a born fighter and I have not seen any priest in the whole of Mangalorean diocese who will stand up against injustice.

In his leadership, we have worked on many projects and achieved success during our youth days. I hold him in a very high esteem even now, as he is the one who made an impact in our lives and molded most of us from those aimless souls of youthfulness to today’s successful professionals. Though he did not have a direct hand in molding my future but he indirectly demonstrated through his teachings/sermons, and the values he inculcated in us during his time he spent with us.

Dear People of Lourdes ward, my humble request to you, please do reconcile. Priest is a head of the church and you are lucky to have an able priest leading your parish. Go back to him and apologize and I am sure he will see you no different than any other parishioners of Kulshekar church. Most of all,our Lord will be happy to see you reconcile in these period of lent and he will bless you & your family abundantly.

Simple philosophy I picked up from one Sunday’s preaching which I would like to share with you all.
“We should not do any such things to others, what we do not want others to do to us.”
“Anger makes a person temporarily insane”
Are we insane to exhibit such foolish act in public?

“Lathon ke bhooth bathonese nahi manthe”. What Vice-president Praveen Patrao did is absolutely correct. Nobody can go to Alter and make announcement without permission from parish priest. Those who are protesting outside the Church compound should meet Bishop if they do have genuine complaint. The stand taken by the police is perfect. United Christian Association, show your unity when ever fanatic association are attacking churches, where where you when churches where attacked? When you bring the protest on to road every one has the right to comment.

There is PRAYER ATMOSPHERE in the CHURCH.The church compound has become very beautiful. The STATION OF THE CROSS OR "KURSASO MOLAO" in the church compound give push to pray. The regular RETREATES AND ADORATIONS fill PRAYER SPIRIT amidst the people. Then WHY THIS PROTEST IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE ? WHAT IS THE HIDDEN AGENDA ? To all the people from outside Kulshekar parish who have commented without knowing the actual facts, please know the facts and then comment. Gap between the parishioners and the parish priest has been widening at great pace ever since the current priest took over the responsibility of the parish with his adamant nature and dictatorship. He thinks only he is right, and others are fools. It feels bad that the internal disputes are made public making a laughable matter for other communities however certain matters do need such protests, when things are not solved within the community and the priest has deaf ears for all the requests. It is high time such priests are given other responsibilities other than leading the faithful, as this is the only solution and bring all the people under the leadership of a good young understanding priest.

I also agree 100% with Mr Steve Pereira, Toronto's views.

Dear Vishal if this was happening in your parish would you have said the samething what you have mentioned in your comment? Especially is that priests job is to see what kind of clothes do people wear or running proper administration? You are glad for punishing a small girl of 2nd Std who wore sleeveless frock and went to the mass, who has no idea of what she did, would you have commented as what you did if that happened to your own daughter or your little sister? I would like to let you know that it is none of priests business to punish someone for what kind of clothes do they wear.
I think parents of the child were too good to keep quiet if it had happened to my daughter I would have definately sue the priests as he has nothing to do with it?
Have you ever thought what kind of moral he has shown to the children with this act, or what kind of moral does he show it to the parishners?
Sorry to say, but it seems to me the priest lacks the leadership qualities and management skills. Moreover it shows his attitude. Unless the priests fix their attitude this kind of problems would happen every where in the parishes in Mangalore. I have a request to the diocese, kindly fix this kind of issues by training the priests the leadership skills and people management skills. Many of our priests lack this.
Guys, be on parishioners shoes and think before you comment. The problem lies with priests not with people if everybody are revolting about this

    (Continuation)
Many priests come abroad asking to help or seek for the donation for their schools and hospitals they build, how many of the poor students or patients benefited out of this? How many poor students get to study there?
Ex: How many poor patients are treated in Fr. Mullers in Mangalore, or in St. John’s in Bangalore? Do they admit the patient unless they deposit the money even if the patient is dying?

How many of the new churches are built in Mangalore when the old building is good enough to stand for more than 15 years? Is that the priests just want to build buildings, squeeze parishners asking them to compulsorily donate certain amount without thinking whether they are capable of doing it or not? The priest does all these to show that he has done big job so that he can move to the next level and couple of them make money out of it and deposit in their personal bank accounts. When the parish committee wants to run the check on it, they are not allowed to do? Why all these happen, is it because priests take the advantage of the kind of respect is been given to them?

I have one request to all friends, when things go wrong protest it peacefully. Do not allow parish priest to act as if he is come from heaven. Teach them how to behave with people and respect each other. That is the only way to fix this kind of problems. Also I have request to the diocese, kindly arrange “the people management skills training” for these priests, if not you would end up reading ma

    Dear friends

These type of incidents would happen in Mangalore or anywhere in India in the parishes because of the priests attitude. Sorry to say our priests in Mangalore or in India think they have come from heaven. Their Ego is so bad they don’t mind saying ‘ self cooking is below their dignity’.

Also I am sorry to say this but most of the priests in India are educated but act like uneducated ones, with no management skills. They are there not to render the service to the poor but to run the business. They expect people to salute them and the kind of tone they use, it’s really disgusting. I don’t know whether they think as if they have come from heaven or something else.

As far as I have seen the priests in the USA, UK, Australia or in Canada, they are much educated and they know how to deal with people. I don’t say all the priests in India are same of what am explaining, but we do find many priests of what I have mentioned about. I am surprised to read in one of the comments that 2nd std girl who could be of 7 years old is asked to stand out because she wore sleeveless frock. My question to the priests, “ Why should they bother about clothing when they are supposed to take care of other things in the parish? What kind of example do they set up to the kids by doing this? Is that they want to show POWER? ( To be continued in next comment)

I wonder there are some elderly people also in the protest!

This protest is one of the most stupid act of any faithful.

I have heard that in the past also there are revolts against the Bishop etc. That means there is some problem with the laity. The priests also can show some signs of forgiveness without compromising the christian values.

By the way, I am very glad that the priest took action against the one who wore sleeveless dress. Dear Father, please keep it up.

But did any one object, when a 2nd standard girl was kept out of the church by the parish priest for wearing a sleeveless frock. Wat harm does a sleeveless frock worn by a 2nd standard girl do to a priest or the church. This is just a small example, there are lot more bigger issues going on in this parish.

Romans 12:21 says "Do not let evil overcome you, but overcome evil by good" what a shame for us, being Catholics not walking in the path of Jesus who taught us to forgive and to forget. Especially during this lent season instead of being light to others instead of fasting and praying at homes protesting on the raod for silly reason. Why dont they settle the matter peacfully among themselves. Come on parishoners of Kulshekar be matured enough and instead of wasting time on protesting same time use for praying and doing good. Please for gods sake dont refeat this act again.

The root cause of this problem is the Gurkar, who being a responsible person and provoked this incident and abused the parents of Mr. Praveen Patrao, the Vice President of the Church, when he prevented the Gurkar from using the Church Sound System for making public announcement. A Gurkar who is representing Parish Priest in his Ward and he should have behaved responsibly. It is he who provoked this incident by trying to make public announcement in the Church, without taking permission from the Parish Priest, for using the Church Sound System inside the Church. The Parish Priest is the custodian of the Church property.

A person who provokes the other and becomes the Root Cause of the problem, has no right to claim justice before God and Law for his deeds. Let the Gurkar tender public apology to the Parish Priest, Mr. Praveen Patrao, the Vice president of the Church and the parishioners of the Holy Cross Church, Kulshekar, Mangalore.

What ever happened inside the church should have been solved within the church compound peacefully by the parish priest. This is really a big shame that this small matter came on the roads and public for others to laugh at us. Whether the protest is peaceful or not this is not important, when this small matter could have solved within 4 walls peacefully why should go on streets and create a sceen? Now what is next?

During Lenten period such protests against priest? Wake up Catholics don’t bring your internal problems on the roads and don’t give a chance to pagans to write against us. Lead by example? Ok? I do condemn what the vice president did inside the church that’s not acceptable, should have been outside the church but inside the church compound. Because there are some stupid Gurkars, who always speaks against priest, they do need such punishment.
A priest won’t protest during condemnation, but his cry reaches God. Whenever someone speaks against his parish Priest, his sins will be carried forward for 4 generations. A priest is a representative of Jesus, going against him, is like going against Jesus. No forgiveness for this sin. If the priest is wrong he will be judged by God, we are not supposed to judge a Parish Priest.

Some of us are missing the point here. We as Christians cannot behave in any way except in an exemplary, loving and forgiving manner. Remeber what Jesus said - "If some one slaps you on the right cheek show him the other". That is the essence of Christianity. What we are doing here is not the way of life as taught to us by Jesus him self. I would still say 'Shame on us'.

Being catholics doing such kind of morcha what a shame Jesus said to forgive and forget and what we are doing instead of settling the matter within themselves in a peaceful manner they are goig on the streets. During the time of Lent we reflect on death and ressurection of Jesus He died to forgive us and said to do the same. Even Jesus said not only love your neighbours but to love those who hate you and to bless those who curse you. The parishioners of Kulshelkhar instead of going on streets open your bible at homes and refect on what Jesus said. May the Lord of Light enlighten your minds. May God give you peace of mind. Throughout the New Testament, there are warnings of both false prophets & false Messiahs, & believers are adjured to be vigilant. The following verses (Matthew 7:15–23) are from the Sermon on the Mount: "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, & a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down & thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them."
The New Testament addresses the same point of a false prophet predicting correctly & Jesus predicted the future appearance of false prophets, affirming that they can perform great signs & miracles. The following verses (24) are from the Olivet Discourse: "At that time many will turn away from the faith & will betray & hate each other, & many false prophets will appear & deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. . For false Christs & false prophets will appear & perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect – if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time" (Matthew 24 NIV).

Priest is the head of the church and who is not believing on him is not follower of CHRIST, Amen.

Lord Jesus "The word of Heavenly Lord"converted all tax collectors as the temple of Heavenly Lord. So the tax collectors became saints and they started to spread the good news that Lord Jesus is the "Word of The Heavenly Lord". But these days the so called servant of God (priests)started to fight among themselves for money, power. They claim that they are supreme, act like they are above God and have authority over all. But remember these words "The greatest in the Kingdom of heaven is the one who humbles himself and becomes like a this child" -Matthew 18:4.
Otherwise the Heavenly Lord will forsake your church and will make its fate same like the Temple of Jerusalem which was destroyed during the time period of Lord Jesus.

The world is burning with fire. People are starving, victimized due to war, hatred and injustice. Jesus has invited us to bring peace and justice. We are called to be witnesses of his life and example. If we fight among ourselves what is the use of blaming others. Parish priest is in charge of the parish. He is right in saying that we are supposed to ask his permission. As parents are responsible for their children parish priest is responsible for the parish. If all of us start exercising the role of the parish priest God forgive us. Let us enter into dialogue with each other, let us have some patience and go ahead. If we are violent people around us become violent. Why do we blame the political parties if we don´t know how to solve our family problems? Please, give up this attitude and let us pray for each other and offer our sufferings and help those who are really in need of our helping hand. God bless you

DAVID OLIVERA Police are law keepers ( protectors). We have to respect. Let police ( Indians - mostly non-Catholic) watch our system, very beautiful discipline which our catholic church has. They will change if they good mind. This is called conversion.!!! Do not worry God is our PROTECTOR!!!

CALM DOWN brothers & sisters. Today is Holi, drink a Tandai. Let differences be settled & shake hands with each other. Recite the 'Protection Prayer'.
Saitan is howvering round. Do you want this to happen. Put JESUS in between the two groups. I strongly request each1, not to encourage gossips, & take part in talks. If you have time, prayer for peace.
Do not be interested in who is right & who is wrong. It will further lead to unending dispute. May God prevail in such situation.
Thank you DAIJIWORLD for the coverage & pictures.
I am truly a Mumbaikar with a blend of hindi-marathi, english-konkani. But my heart truly lies to the land where my parents have come from.
Simply CALM DOWN folks. isme he apka balahi hai. Amen.

It is abominable to see we Christians do this, in front of a Church during the holy season of Lent. We are supposed to be good examples. What are we teaching the young children in the group who is watching this.It is disgusting to say the least. Any and all difference must be settled amicably across the table, and is not to be brought out in the open like hooligans. May be tomorrow you will have a church of your own, because you dont like the Paris Priest. Please behave, and show love and compassion around yourself. For this is what Jesus died for. Shame on all of us.

This was expected. As I had mentioned in my earlier comments, Catholics have made the religion their private property.

The catholic leaders are also politicising religion for various reasons.

There should be NO GROUPS/organisations/Politcal alignments, in the name of religion.

This is just a starting point. Unless it is curbed in the bud, which I am sure, may not be easy, we will surely be a laughing stock.

    Religion should be only spiritual.

this is SHAMEFUL act from the catholics of kuleshekar. our religion known for forgiving, has marred this noble virtue. who ever responsible for this DHARANA, should repent and ask pardon from the LORD and from the PARISH PRIEST. I pray for his speedy recovery of heart and mind in the season of Lent. Remember there is a forum where we can settle our differences and find solutions.Christians dont break up, get united please.

Why wash our dirty linen in public? can't we settle the issue amicably instead of burning effigy in front of families and children.
What sort of example/standard are we setting involving young children in this sort of activities?!!!!
    Shame on us....

God only knows when will the Kulshekar parishioners and the priests have the common understanding and stop fights within the community. This is a long history and does not looks like getting solved. This is not religion, it is pure politics.

It is a new generation way to insult. To win the hearts of others you need to lose some colours of your ego. So be humble in life and show love to others. This issue is nothing but ego and arrogance. Shame on these people and they should be removed all postings they hold in Kulshekar church.

This clearly shows that in our society, we have to abide the rules made by Priest and his Chamchas. This is in all churches in India.Good move by UCA.Now priests are become politicians.

This is unfortunate and very bad..we the christians are in a difficult era and have to be united. Just remember other day all of you came together to protest against Justice Somashekara report and now we fight amongst ourselves. Whatever the differences, they should be solved amicably. I humbly request the true leaders of church to intervene and pacify both the groups. The Lord Bishop should see that this does not escalate into a major disharmony. We the christians are the followers of Jesus..why we fight on ego issues?

Whole world is fighting against each other.May be caste, Creed,Religion,Power etc.etc.
Good to see that we see Catholics fight between themselves and show how strong they are and then crib that we are troubled by New Life, Jehovah witness etc.etc. This shows how true was Karl Marx when he said "Religion is the opium of the people". only thing left is that political parties enter and make the maximum gain. Good Luck to all.
