Mangaluru, Jul 2: Sources said that the estimated loss due to the heavy rains that lashed the district is more than Rs five crore. The district disaster management authority is still assessing the damage due to rain. Exact figures will be known in some time.
The low lying areas of Baikampady industrial area suffered the most as the rain water gushed inside the industry premises damaging property and machineries.
Most of the damage occurred in Mangaluru city and rural areas. In the district, 77 houses were partially damaged while 11 were completely destroyed. In Mangaluru city limits, seven houses were destroyed completely while 42 were partially damaged. In Ullal, 22 houses were partially damaged while three were completely destroyed. In addition, 38 electricity poles, three transformers, electrical wires and mud roads were damaged. This itself amounts to Rs 1.5 to two crore.
On Thursday, the coastal district received two times more rain than usual. Last year during this time, the district received 44.1 mm rain. However, on Thursday the amount of rain was 85.1 mm. In Mangaluru and Bantwal limits 108.9 mm rain showered which caused more damage.
In Baikampady more than 30 industries were badly affected as the rain water gushed inside and damaged motor, raw materials and finished goods. Isaac Vas, president of Baikampady Canara small scale Industries association said that the exact extent of loss will be known in a day or two.
