Mangaluru, Jul 7: Several parts of the Dakshina Kannada district continued to receive heavy rainfall on Thursday, July 7.

Nantoor junction witnessed traffic jams due to incessant rains and motorists as well as pedestrians were stranded for a long time.

As the meteorological department had declared a red alert in three districts, the district administration has declared a holiday for educational institutions.

A red alert has been declared in Dakshina Kannada (DK), Udupi and Uttara Kannada, as these districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. It is said these districts are likely to receive over 204-millimeter rainfall.

As of now, the coastal area is receiving the highest rainfall, roads and several houses are damaged due to heavy rainfall.

    These are normal rainfalls of the rainy season; no cyclones, hurricanes, cloudbursts etc; flash flooding across the city is due to rampant concretization without commensurate arrangements for the passage of rain water into the sea through well planned drainage system, and constant deforestation! Just imagine a situation where it rained 1026 mm in 24 hours on one fateful day; if the same happened here, people in individual houses would have no place to hide! This flash flooding will worsen over the years as the major damage has already been done by the builders cartel which cannot be reversed without making drastic changes which are impossible now!! Also the problem of seaside land erosion is increasing which will make many houses impossible to inhabit!!

    Rain is not any new to coastal region... Water falls and flows... Only when we block the flows it bites back... But we seem to never learn...

    Every year same story....We never learn because we are behind the greed of 40% gst st = 50%. We people know everything but just shut our eyes. If artificial floods happen, again govt will release money ....which will go to their bank accounts safely. i.e. 50% 50%....
