Kasargod, Jul 7: It is very rare to find teeth in the mouth of a newborn baby. However, a baby born to a couple from Manjeshwar surprised the doctors as it had two teeth at birth itself.
Rajesh and Dhanya of Miyapadavu in Manjeshwar were blessed with a baby girl on July 4 at a hospital in Kumbala in the Kasargod district. The doctors at the hospital asked the parents to contact a dentist for further information on the appearance of teeth. Accordingly, the couple met Dr Murali Mohana Chuntaru of Suraksha Dental clinic at Hosangadi.
Dr Chuntaru said, “It is extremely rare that a newborn baby has teeth in the mouth. If a child is born with teeth, it is removed through surgery as there is a possibility that the teeth will get stuck in the throat while the baby is sucking milk from the mother's breast. However, the teeth found in this baby are strong and there is no need for surgery.”
The doctor further said that these teeth are called Natal, Embryo or Birth tooth. Sometimes there is a possibility that the teeth are formed within a month of the baby being born. These are called Neonatal teeth.
