Bantwal, Jul 10: A landslide was reported in the same location of Mukuda of Panjikallu on Sunday, July 10 where three people died on July 6. However, due to the presence of mind by gram panchayat administration, police and taluk administration four people were evacuated and saved minutes before the landslide occurred again.

Three people from Kerala had died in a landslide in the taluk four days ago. Today being a Sunday, many tourists along with locals were on a visit to the same spot where the landslide occurred.

Acting on a complaint received by grama panchayat from the locals, the matter was brought to the notice of Tahsildar Dr Smitha Ramu who was away in Bengaluru on work. Tahsildar directed the police department and grama panchayat officials to take precautionary measures and avoid people from visiting the place.

Acting swiftly on the directions of tahsildar, gram panchayat chairman Sanjeev Poojary and PDO Vidyashri, local members Mohan Das, emergency services member Yashwant Jora and police officials Shekar and Mahendra swung into action and visited the spot.

Four visitors who were in Panchikallu on a visit in their vehicle were asked to leave the place immediately. As the four of them proceeded towards their vehicle, the landslide occurred where they were originally standing.

This is the result of rampant cutting forests and hills and leveling the ground below, to build houses, without any strong concrete barrier/retainer wall to prevent landslides! DK being a hilly region is bearing the brunt of unscientific and illegal excavation of mountains for areca plantations and developing sites for housing! This lackadaisical approach to earn easy and fast money is backfiring and put life and property to immense risk! The situation has crossed limits and beyond repair as one can expect more such landslides during the rains wherever the natural topography of a mountain has been altered!!

This is clear case of man made disasters. The owners of this place should be punished as they are responsible for the death of 3 people. There is no value for life of common man. Hope the authorities take strict action against the culprits. People with greed are responsible for these kind of disasters.

Mr.surendra, dont comment without knowing the reality. This place is not a resort and the house is built 10-15 years before as per the reports and damaged sheds might be build earlier than this. No one can imagine the landslide to a distance of more than 100 meters and destroy the shed. Moreover as shown in the TV ground reports, the owner of the house reported and requested for district administration the situation unfortunately no one turned around and was a dissaster. So who shuld be punished? owner or goverment authorities?

raman..you just go and believe the tv reports. I know the reality. I know this place very well as to what it was and what it is. It is purely the greed of the owners. You cannot play around nature. Just because of the greed of these people three innocents lost their life.

Building house at owners cost is greed? Doing agriculture work and outsourcing the labourers is greed? Please mention clearly. We support on humanitarian basis not politically, Natural calamity is happened and those affected must be supported immediately by the government and district administration and preventive measures must be taken before disaster.

raman by any chance did you see the quality of house given to labourers??? It's inhumane. They were told to stay in the shed used for cows.

Mr. raman I think you are not understanding the issue here. How this calamity happened? who is responsible for this? What type of accomodation provided to those who died in this calamity? This calamity happened due to human greed as pointed out by Mr. Surendra. These people have done acts against the nature due to which this sad thing happened.
