Mangaluru: Ivan D'Souza wants district declared flood prone, seeks special grants

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (LDS)

Mangaluru, Jul 11: Former MLC Ivan D'Souza on Monday, July 11 highlighted the importance of ongoing conditions of the flood affected areas and directed the government to act upon this situation with immediate effect.

He discussed the issues owing to the incessant rains in the district. He shared that the red alert has been declared for the next few days in the district and also added that the past 10 days have witnessed immense downpour, flooding of rivers affecting daily life. He said that the Congress party officers had paid visits to the flood affected areas and informed the people of the help that was to be given to them.

Ivan D'Souza said, “The government must pay heed to the vows of the people at the earliest. The condition has already worsened. Nearly 57 houses have been damaged already. The government had assured the people of timely compensation, but how can the ruling government imagine that a mere amount would suffice?, he questioned.

Further he added that many houses were on the verge of collapsing due to unstable ground. He pointed out that there was a growing need to compensate for the loss.

He also demanded that the expenses shelled out for the flood affected households and total amount of compensation must be enlisted on white paper, with clear details. He also alleged that credibility was absent. “Do not turn a deaf ear to people’s vows. Various diseases have been on a steep rise and the people who have been suffering from serious illnesses have been denied admission in hospitals, claiming they have been reserved for the patients who have contracted coronavirus. A massive stretch of horticultural crop has been destroyed and they have not gotten any sort of compensation for it yet. Besides, the condition of the national highways has been pathetic and the potholes are a menace altogether,” he said.

The former MLC also said that the chief minister must visit the affected areas and that they must be compensated for the losses incurred.

Further, he announced that former CM Siddaramaiah’s 75th birthday celebrations would be organized on August 3 at Davangere and conveyed that the celebrations are in full swing. The main organizers would be the Congress party workers, various political persons and others. The event will have Rahul Gandhi, D K Shivakumar and other important dignitaries. He shared that the expected audience would be nearing 10 lacs. He requested the cooperation of each party member for this event to become a successful one.

“This is evidently a milestone achieved by him and it is our primary duty to recognize the remarkable contributions he has made to the country. This is a celebratory event where a leader as dynamic as him would be completing 75 years and we greatly wish that his ideas and visions illuminate the path of the future generation as well. A committee has been formed for the same comprising R V Deshpande, K N Rajanna, H C Mahadevappa and others,” he said.

If flooding happens in Kannur, padil-bajal cross and other places, it is because of unplanned development. These places never experienced flooding until humans showed up with unnatural concrete designs. Ivan sir should pluck some courage and invoke/quote science behind these unscientific structures and developments that are resulting in artificial flooding. No, district is not flood prone - totally disagree.

Any press meet or statements, only the party spokesperson should speak. If everyone speaks means it shows that there is something wrong in the leadership. That what I believe.

Pointing more and more to climate change studies show Monsoon rains are getting dumped in about 21 days as against earlier ..spread over 3 months ..mere 3 weeks 90 % of rains approx ... This is causing enormous damage.. flooding etc Water retention and soaking into soil not happening Due to enormous downpour ... This is not the only factor however .. Rampant construction /unplanned .. cutting hills .. destroy tree cover .. Rivers clogged .. no storm water drains .. Mangroves destruction.... Laying of railway tracks .. roads through forest areas .. western ghats reduced to a rubble ..by miners .. quarrying.. illegal RESORTS ... Projects like yettinahole ..
